Hamburg. Slowly but surely the tingling increases Robin Christian. In mid-August, the 30-year-old basketball professional will see his daughter see the light of day. At the same time, the two-meter-tall winger, whose move from Bundesliga relegated Rasta Vechta to the Hamburg Towers it is perfect to start the season preparation with your new colleagues.

Christians will meet some familiar faces. With head coach Pedro Calles (32), assistant coach Miguel Zapata (41) and guard Max DiLeo (27), the newcomer from Hamburg already worked together in Vechta. “We’ve already had a successful time together, it’s a lot of fun working together. To be honest – having Max as a team-mate is cool, having him as an opponent is not so cool. Pedro and Miguel manage to make players better. And that’s my goal too, I want to become a better player in Hamburg, “explained Christen, who is the second newcomer of the summer at the Towers after Lukas Meisner (25, Löwen Braunschweig).

New Hamburgers had to take a break of 16 months

The native of Berlin should give the squad more depth and above all serve as a role model for the younger players. Because Christians has not only got to know the sunny side of the basketball business. In 2018, a severe knee injury and appendix operation resulted in a 16-month break. “Without wanting to sound too dramatic now, but there was a phase when I also considered the idea of an end to my career,” says Christen of the difficult time.

Christians should serve as an example with his attitude

The “basketball worker”, as he likes to describe himself, missed the entire 2019/20 season. Last year, the variable forward, which reached a new personal BBL record in April with 23 points and 9 rebounds against eventual champions Berlin, made its comeback – and was then used in all competitive games. “That was the biggest success for me last season,” says Christen.

In addition to 7.7 points, he collected an average of 3.8 rebounds and distributed 1.1 assists per game. “I am happy that Robin is healthy again. Last year he impressively proved that and showed that he belongs in the BBL. I also appreciate his character and his mentality – he is ready to do anything for the team’s success”, Trainer Calles is looking forward to working together again.
