Compulsory break! Thiem is also out for Wimbledon – sports mix

Dominic Thiem’s wrist injury is more serious than expected. Austria’s tennis star has to take a break for weeks, missed Wimbledon.

The world number five had to give up on Tuesday at the lawn tournament in Mallorca when the score was 5: 2 against Adrian Mannarino with severe wrist pain.

More detailed investigations have now shown that the Lichtenwörther has suffered a “detachment of the posterior capsular apparatus on the right wrist”. Therefore, the 27-year-old has to wear a splint for five weeks before he can start again with simple exercises to strengthen the mobility of the wrist again. Only then can the tennis star pick up the racket again.

Cancellation for three tournaments

This means that the Lower Austrian has to skip the classic Wimbledon lawn that begins on Monday. Just like the tournaments in Hamburg and Gstaad.

“I’ll do whatever the doctors tell me to get better as quickly as possible. They told me I probably won’t be able to play for a few weeks, but I’ll do my best to be back on the field soon,” said Thiem.

Thiem wants to “come back stronger”

The goal of the 27-year-old remains to defend his title at the US Open. Until then, however, it could be a race against time. “I am determined to come back even stronger,” wrote the Lichtenwörther.

Thiem is currently in Barcelona, where his wrist injury is being monitored. Further MRI examinations are to follow.
