IFAB Relaxes Hand Rule: “Act the Spirit of the Game” | European Football Championship 2020

During the first half between Turkey and Italy there were 2 questionable phases. Each time, a Turkish defender got the ball against the arm in his own penalty area, but the Dutch referee Danny Makkelie, like the VAR, did not intervene.

Not an ill-considered choice since the IFAB relaxed the hand rules before the start of this European Championship. Referee boss at the European football association UEFA Roberto Rosetti gave more explanation.

“We have rewritten the rules around the hand game to bring it more in line with the spirit of football,” said the former Italian referee. “Footballers should be able to play football freely again.”

For example, any ball hitting the arm or hand is no longer a violation. The position of the hand or arm will now have to be assessed in relation to the body movement in that situation. In other words, there will be more room for interpretation of ref and VAR.

When a player makes his body unnaturally bigger, this will in principle still be punished with a penalty kick.

Some changes in the hand rules that have been in effect since the start of this European Championship:
