A highly anticipated international hockey match between Slovakia and the Czech Republic ended abruptly Saturday after a Slovak player suffered a serious neck injury. The game, part of the Five Nations Tournament in Nyköping, Sweden, was called off in the 15th minute, the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation (SZĽH) announced, Šport.sk reported.
The incident involved 17-year-old Slovak forward Matúš Válek, who was cut by a Czech player’s skate during a play near the boards. The federation confirmed Válek was transported to a hospital in Sweden and his condition is stable, with no immediate threat to his life.
Incurrence of the Injury
The critical moment occurred just past the midway point of the first period. Válek was battling for the puck with Czech forward Viktor Šámal along the boards in the Slovak defensive zone. While Válek won the initial face-off, Šámal subsequently fell over him, and the blade of his skate made contact with Válek’s neck, according to the hockey news portal hokej.cz and the report by Šport.sk.
The on-ice medical team reacted immediately, providing emergency care to Válek before helping him off the ice. The incident caused a significant delay as players from both teams watched from their benches visibly shaken. Slovak media outlets described the scene as Matúš Válek was removed from the ice after suffering a serious cut to the neck from an opponent’s skate during a game.

Game Halted and Abandoned
After assessing the severity of the situation, officials made the decision to stop the game.
“Vďaka uvedomelej reakci hráča a rýchlemu zásahu zdravotného personálu i členov realizačného tímu slovenskej hokejovej reprezentácie do 20 rokov bol hráč urýchlene prevezený do nemocnice. Aktuálne je stabilizovaný a mimo ohrozenia života,” the SZĽH stated, according to Sportnet. “Vzhľadom na obrovský šok pre celý tím, vážnosť situácie a zdravie hráča, ktoré je vždy na prvom mieste, sa oba tímy dohodli na predčasnom ukončení stretnutia.”
At the time of the stoppage, the Czech Republic was leading 1-0, a goal scored by Matěj Pekař on a power play earlier in the period.

Válek’s Condition and Background
The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation has been providing updates on Válek’s condition. The Slovak coaching staff remains in close contact with the Swedish medical team, offering full support to the young player during his hospitalization.
In the current season of the Czech Extraliga, he has played seven games for HC Pardubice and ten games for the Pardubice junior team. In the spring, he won a silver medal with the Slovak U18 team at the IIHF World Championship, as detailed by Pravda.

Reactions and Next Steps
The immediate priority for both the Slovak and Czech federations has been the health and recovery of Matúš Válek.
“Realizačný tím slovenskej hokejovej reprezentácie do 20 rokov je plne súčinný so zdravotníckym personálom vo Švédsku a poskytne Matúšovi Válekovi potrebnú pomoc a podporu počas pobytu v nemocnici. “Matúšovi Válekovi prajeme v mene SZĽH skoré uzdravenie,” the federation said, a sentiment echoed by Slovak and Czech media.”
There is no information on when the next game for either team will be or if the Five Nations Tournament will proceed with any adjustments.
