Slovakia’s preparations for the 2026 Deutschland Cup in Düsseldorf suffered a major disruption when head coach Vladimír Országh had to replace seven originally selected players due to injuries and illness, Šport.sk reported. The medical absences forced a frantic overhaul of the national team roster just ahead of the tournament’s scheduled start from November 5 to November 8, 2026.
Health Issues Derail Initial Selection
The coaching staff’s plans unraveled incrementally as medical setbacks accumulated following the release of the initial squad list. Goaltender Roman Rychlík and the Liberec duo of Martin Faško-Rudáš and Michal Ivan were the first to be ruled out by injuries. Liptovský Mikuláš forward Matúš Vojtech, who joined the group as an alternate, suffered an injury shortly after his arrival as well. The final blow to the original blueprint came right before the training camp opened, with mandatory withdrawals from experienced offensive leaders Róbert Lantoši and Alex Tamáši.
Ospravedlnenky sa nám zbierali postupne,
head coach Vladimír Országh explained to Hockey Slovakia, noting that all seven roster changes stemmed strictly from medical reasons. Mali sme pripravený zoznam náhradníkov, z toho sme vyberali, no aj ten sa nám v nedeľu večer výrazne zmenšoval.
Despite the shrinking pool of reserves, Országh confirmed that the team managed to fill every vacancy and would travel to Germany with the intended lineup composition of two goaltenders, nine defensemen, and fourteen forwards.
New Faces Answer the Call
To offset the sudden departures, the coaching staff summoned a fresh group of players, heavily drawing from the domestic Tipsport liga. Poprad forward Peter Bjalončík received a late call-up that marks his first career selection to the senior national team. Bjalončík acknowledged his surprise inclusion, explaining that he learned the news from club manager Richard Stehlík immediately after stepping out of the shower following a league match.

Alongside Bjalončík, the roster additions feature goaltender Patrik Jurčák from HC Košice, alongside defensemen Martin Bodák from HK Poprad and František Gajdoš from Vlci Žilina. The forward corps also welcomed reinforcements in Marek Valach and Filip Krivošík. According to team updates, Krivošík spent the opening day recovering from a mild viral illness and joined his teammates at the Bratislava training camp on Tuesday, bringing the active player count to a full complement of 24 participants.
Updated Squad for Düsseldorf
The finalized 25-man roster set to represent Slovakia in Germany comprises a mix of domestic league standouts and players competing abroad. In goal, Patrik Jurčák and Eugen Rabčan of Kometa Brno share the crease. The defensive pairings feature Martin Bodák, František Gajdoš, Jakub Chromiak of Škoda Plzeň, Samuel Kňažko of Vítkovice Ridera, Patrik Koch of Oceláři Třinec, Jakub Meliško of Dukla Michalovce, Mislav Rosandič of HC Košice, Oliver Turan of HC Slovan Bratislava, and Martin Vitaloš of HK Nitra.

Up front, the forward lines include Peter Bjalončík, Samuel Buček, Viliam Čacho of Mountfield HK, Sebastián Čederle of Färjestad BK, Patrik Hrehorčák, Simon Jellúš, Jakub Kolenič of HKM Zvolen, Filip Krivošík, Oleksij Myklucha of Pelicans Lahti, Aurel Nauš, Pavol Regenda of HV 71, Miloš Roman, Marián Studenič of Färjestad BK, and Marek Valach.
