The Real Club de Tenis Barcelona (RCT Barcelona) secured a dominant sweep of the Spanish national tennis championships, winning both the men’s and women’s team titles. Canal Tenis reported that the club’s victory in the men’s draw marks their 36th national title, while the women’s team claimed their 33rd championship.
Men’s 36th Title in a Hard-Fought Final
The men’s final pitted the perennial favorites from Catalonia against the host club, Club de Tenis Chamartín. Despite entering the match with the weight of history behind them, the RCT Barcelona squad faced stiff resistance from the Madrid-based team. The intensity of the competition was evident in the scorecards, as four of the five matches played were extended to three sets.
RCT Barcelona ultimately clinched the series with a 4-1 victory, rebounding from a loss in the previous year’s final. The lineup featured notable talent including Roberto Carballés, Alejandro Moro Cañas, Vilius Gaubas, and Dani Rincón, all under the leadership of team captain Marc López. Following the win, the team’s number one player, Max Alcalá, credited the victory to a strong team culture, stating, “We are very good players, of high level, but above all, off the court we get along very well. We have a lot of complicity at dinners, in everything.”
Women’s Title Defense in Madrid
In the women’s draw, RCT Barcelona arrived as the defending champions and once again faced Club de Tenis Chamartín. The result mirrored the men’s outcome, with the Catalan club securing a 3-1 victory to take the national title.
The final began with momentum for Barcelona, as Guiomar Maristany defeated Carmen Gallardo and Ruth Roura bested Marta Soriano. While Ane Mintegi secured a point for the home side following a withdrawal by Andrea Lázaro, the series was decided in the final match. Carlota Martínez defeated María García in a competitive contest to seal the 33rd championship for the club. Javier Luengo, the women’s team captain, acknowledged the pressure of the final, noting that while the team started with a 2-0 lead, the matches leveled out before Martínez managed to close the series.
Championship Consequences
The results reaffirm the status of RCT Barcelona as the most successful club in the history of the Spanish team championships. For Club de Tenis Chamartín, the weekend marked a significant effort on home soil, though they ultimately fell short of the title in both categories.
