Polish Olympic Boxer Paweł Kakietek Dies at 51 After Cancer Battle

Paweł Kakietek, a six-time Polish boxing champion, Sydney Olympian, and former representative of Poland, has died at the age of 51 following a battle with stomach cancer according to Interia Sport.

The tragic news was first shared on the Siepomaga platform, where a public fundraiser had been organized to help finance alternative medical treatments for the legendary Gwardia Warszawa fighter after chemotherapy failed to stop the disease. The post on the fundraising page read, Takie informacje łamią serce na miliony kawałków… Po długiej i trudnej walce z nowotworem odszedł Paweł. Wierzymy, że jest teraz w miejscu, gdzie nie ma już bólu i cierpienia.

Family Sought Alternative Methods After Chemotherapy

Paweł Kakietek (1975–2026) learned of his diagnosis last year following a gastroscopy, which revealed a malignant stomach tumor. Recognized as one of Poland’s top boxers at the turn of the century in the light-middleweight and middleweight divisions, he initially underwent chemotherapy. As conventional options waned, his family sought alternative methods and gathered funds through the Siepomaga platform, but the efforts ultimately fell short. Following his retirement from the sport, Kakietek had served as a police officer.

Boxer Captured Multiple National Championship Titles

Kakietek joined Gwardia Warszawa at the age of 14 under the guidance of coach Paweł Skrzecza. At 17, he captured a bronze medal at the Polish Junior Championships, followed by a gold medal the following year, before also claiming a national youth title.

Domestically, he secured six Polish championship titles and engaged in celebrated rivalries with Robert Gortat. The Polish Boxing Federation noted in a social media tribute, Ich ringowe boje były wzorem taktycznego kunsztu, walki w półdystansie i niezłomności. He also stood on the podium four times at the Feliks Stamm Memorial, claiming victories in 1999 and 2000.

His success paved the way for international competition, leading to his appearance at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney as reported by Interia Sport. In Sydney, Kakietek won his opening bout against China’s Abuduyeheman by referee stoppage in the third round with the score at 18:3. He was subsequently eliminated after a 7:21 defeat against American Jeffrey Lacy, who later went on to capture the IBF super-middleweight world title from 2004 to 2006 and the IBO title from 2005 to 2006.

Legacy in Polish Boxing

The Polish Boxing Federation emphasized the profound impact Kakietek had on the sport during his career, writing, Polskie środowisko bokserskie pogrążone jest w głębokim żalu po stracie utytułowanego zawodnika, który przez lata stanowił o sile biało-czerwonych na krajowych i międzynarodowych ringach. At present, specific details regarding memorial services or public farewell arrangements have not yet been made public by his family or the federation.
