Pauline Coatanéa will conclude her professional handball career with Brest Bretagne Handball (BBH) at the end of the 2027-2028 season. The club confirmed on Thursday that the veteran right-winger has signed a one-year extension, marking what she intends to be her final campaign as a professional athlete.
A Career Final Chapter at the Brest Arena
The decision to extend her contract comes as Coatanéa, 33, enters her tenth season with the Finistère-based club. A native of nearby Saint-Renan, she first joined the organization as a youth player after developing at the Locmaria handball club. Following a five-year stint with Nantes starting in 2012, she returned to Brest in 2017 to solidify her role as a cornerstone of the team’s growth.
Coatanéa noted that the timing of the extension was a personal choice aimed at providing clarity as she approaches retirement. “I felt that I still had things to experience with this group,” she explained in a statement released by the club. “I also wanted to set a limit for myself by saying that this was the last one, so that it would be clear in my head and that I could now live these moments more serenely.”
Building a Legacy in Finistère
The club’s leadership emphasized the impact Coatanéa has had on the team’s development since her 2017 return. Cléopatre Darleux, the director of sports for BBH, described the winger as a “truly emblematic figure” of the club. In comments provided to the club’s official media, Darleux stated that the team intends to use the upcoming season to honor Coatanéa's contributions, which include helping the club through its rise to national and international prominence.
The club credits Coatanéa with supporting the organization through its major transitions, including the initial move to the Brest Arena and subsequent European campaigns. Her professional resume includes significant international success; as a former member of the French national team, she was part of the squad that won the European Championship in 2018 and secured the gold medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
The Shift in the Brest Roster
Coatanéa’s announcement arrives alongside broader roster changes for Brest Bretagne Handball. While the club recently confirmed the high-profile signing of star Henny Reistad for next season, other changes have highlighted a period of transition for the squad. Coatanéa cited these changes as a motivator for her return, noting her desire to experience another season in the Brest Arena environment with the evolving group.
The upcoming season will serve as a final tour for the player, who has balanced her professional commitments with motherhood. With the extension finalized, the 2027-2028 season will ensure a conclusion to her career that aligns with her status as a local sporting icon.
