Patro Eisden Staff Condemn Play Sports Broadcast Over Nilis Injury Footage

Patro Eisden staff members Luc Nilis and Stijn Stijnen have condemned broadcaster Play Sports and journalist Carl Dircksens for airing footage of Nilis’s career-ending leg break during a football preview program. The broadcast, which aired ahead of a match between Chelsea and Manchester United, featured images of the double fracture Nilis suffered on September 9, 2000, while playing for Aston Villa against Ipswich Town following a collision with goalkeeper Richard Wright.

Direct Rebuke Via Video Message

“I think everyone knows how hard and how bad that has weighed on me in recent years,” Nilis said in the message. “I find it unacceptable and unacceptable that you bring this up again. You just don’t realize how hard you hurt me with this.”

Stijnen followed with a sharp rebuke, characterizing the broadcast as a cowardly act and demanding accountability directly from the journalist rather than through the use of a former player’s trauma. “In my entire football career, I have never seen anything so low from a journalist. This is unworthy of a journalist. You should be ashamed. Deeply ashamed,” Stijnen stated.

Journalist Defense and Halloween Context

Dircksens defended the segment by explaining that the clips were shown in connection with Halloween and a historical review of severe football injuries. The journalist stated that he had no intention of making light of the severe injury and offered an apology if the broadcast caused distress, emphasizing that hurting Nilis was never the objective.

Recent Structural Changes at Patro Eisden Maasmechelen

The incident coincides with a recent structural change at Patro Eisden Maasmechelen, where Nilis transitioned last week from his role as an A-team field coach to join the sporting cell alongside sports director Stijn Stijnen to oversee the club’s broader sporting operations.
