Otto Lopez Up for Silver Slugger as Marlins Listen to Offers

Otto Lopez, the Quebec-born shortstop of the Miami Marlins, is one of three National League shortstops in contention for a Silver Slugger Award after leading Major League Baseball with 191 hits this season, RDS reported.

Lopez, 28, is grouped with Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz and Washington’s CJ Abrams on the finalist list unveiled Thursday by Louisville Slugger, the brand that administers the award.

The 191-hit season that put Lopez on the shortstop list

Lopez’s case rests on a season that led all of baseball in hits. He also paced the Marlins with 71 RBIs, nine triples and a .305 batting average that ranked fifth in MLB, and he tied teammate Javier Sanoja for the club lead with 32 doubles, according to RDS.

Those numbers come from a breakout 2026 campaign that stands in sharp contrast to his previous season. Passionmlb.com reported that Lopez hit .246 with 15 home runs, 77 RBIs and a 3.6 WAR across 143 games in 2025, then posted a .305 average with a .786 OPS, 11 home runs, 71 RBIs, 34 stolen bases and a 6.1 WAR in 2026 — the same hit total, 191, that topped the majors.

How the Silver Slugger is decided

Each year, one Silver Slugger is given to the best hitter at each position in both the National League and the American League. The ballot is cast by managers and coaches around the majors, who cannot vote for players on their own teams, RDS reported. Louisville Slugger released the finalists Thursday, and the winners will be announced Nov. 17.

Brewers and White Sox also well represented among finalists

World Series champion Milwaukee placed three players on the finalist lists: Jake Bauers at first base, Brice Turang at second base and Jackson Chourio in the outfield. Manitoba’s Tristan Peters, a Chicago White Sox outfielder, is also among the finalists, RDS reported.

Miami listening to offers on its shortstop

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, as reported by passionmlb.com, wrote that the Marlins are not shopping Lopez or Xavier Edwards but will listen if a team offers a significant return. Lopez still has three seasons of team control before free agency and should earn a little more than $5 million in 2027. The Toronto Blue Jays, Lopez’s former organization, have been mentioned as a possible suitor, with Andres Gimenez currently at shortstop and little offensive production from that position.
