Montreal Alouettes Davis Alexander wins CFL Most Outstanding Player

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander and wide receiver Tyson Philpot have been named the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian, respectively, the league announced on Thursday.

The awards recognize a dominant season for the Montreal franchise. The selection process involved 56 voters, including 36 local and 20 national members of the Football Reporters of Canada. Alexander, who led the Alouettes to a league-best 14-4 record, secured the top individual honor, finishing ahead of Edmonton Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo.

Alexander’s historic passing performance

Alexander’s campaign marked the first time an Alouettes player won the league’s top player award since Anthony Calvillo in 2009. Over 16 starts, the quarterback surpassed 5,000 passing yards for the first time in his career, totaling 5,257 yards by the end of the season.

His efficiency was a defining statistic of his season. Alexander completed 380 of his 527 pass attempts—a 72.1% success rate—and maintained a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 35-to-4. He recorded ten games with more than 300 passing yards, five of which exceeded 400 yards, finishing the year with a quarterback efficiency rating of 122.7.

Philpot’s record-breaking receiving season

Tyson Philpot earned the title of Most Outstanding Canadian after a season that saw him rewrite the Alouettes’ and league record books. He finished the year with 124 receptions, breaking the team record of 112 previously held by Ben Cahoon and Jamel Richardson.

Philpot also set a new CFL record for receiving yards by a Canadian player in a single season, accumulating 1,809 yards. This total surpassed the previous mark of 1,662 yards set by Terry Evanshen in 1967. In addition to his yardage, Philpot’s 124 catches established a new league record for receptions in a single season by a Canadian, eclipsing the mark set by Brad Sinopoli in 2018. In the voting for the Canadian award, Philpot finished ahead of Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira and B.C. Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke.

Voting breakdown for top honors

The voting results reflect the clear margins by which both Alouettes players were chosen by the Football Reporters of Canada. In the Most Outstanding Player category, Alexander received 40 first-place votes to total 236 points, while Philpot received 12 first-place votes for 154 points.

For the Most Outstanding Canadian award, Philpot dominated the ballot with 48 first-place votes, totaling 245 points. Nathan Rourke followed with 114 points, and Brady Oliveira placed third with 74 points.

The Alouettes now turn their attention to the postseason, preparing for a matchup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the East Final.
