Lille Defeats Rennes 2-1 as President Létang Points Out Budget Gap

LOSC defeated the Stade Rennais 2-1 on Sunday during the 10th round of Ligue 1 at Roazhon Park, Foot Mercato reported.

Soriba Diaoune opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute. Boulaye Dia equalized for Rennes in the 31st minute before Nathan Ngoy restored the lead for Lille in the 68th minute.

The victory lifted the northern club to second place in the Ligue 1 standings with 21 points, trailing Paris Saint-Germain by just a single point. Rennes remained in fifth position following their first home defeat of the season.

Following the match, LOSC president Olivier Létang pointed out the substantial economic gap between the two squads in his remarks to reporters in the mixed zone, according to Foot Mercato.

Il ne faut pas oublier non plus que ça fait partie des plus gros budgets de la division. Ils ont une masse salariale qui doit être quatre fois la nôtre. Donc c’est une belle performance, Létang stated, noting that Rennes maintains one of the division’s largest budgets and a payroll roughly four times that of Lille.

Létang had previously been president of the Breton club between 2017 and 2020.

On a un bilan qui est positif, même très positif. On a 21 points après dix journées, donc c’est quelque chose qui est très bien, he acknowledged, while reflecting on early-season criticism regarding the team’s style of play. Il fallait être patient, il faut toujours être patient, he added.

The club president also pointed to recent physical setbacks and suspensions that tested the depth of his squad. He recalled a prior defeat against Nice before the international break, admitting he pas trop aimé les attitudes shown by the group during that fixture.

With 24 matches remaining on the domestic calendar, Létang emphasized the need for sustained effort. Il faut rester mesuré, calme, les pieds sur terre, he concluded.
