Lechia Gdansk Fans Chant Karol Nawrocki During I Liga Match
Political chants echoed across the stadium during the first half of a Polish I Liga football match between Lechia Gdańsk and Unia Skierniewice, SportoweFakty reported. Hardcore supporters in the stadium’s ultra section honored Karol Nawrocki by chanting his full name. The demonstration started with the stadium announcer in the supporters’ section before fans behind the goal joined in the chorus.
Political Slogans and Banners Surface at the Stadium
The chanting extended beyond the president’s name as fans also shouted Konstytucja
(Constitution), a reference to ongoing turmoil surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal, according to SportoweFakty. Supporters also directed offensive slogans toward Donald Tusk. Przegląd Sportowy reported that a large banner near the pitch displayed the slogan: You prosecute us for flares, you are setting Poland on fire yourself.
Interia Sport noted that the match ended in a 3–2 victory for Lechia Gdańsk after trailing 2–1 at halftime, with club chaplain Father Jarosław Wąsowicz sharing footage and images of the stadium demonstrations on social media.
Constitutional Tribunal Crisis Sparks Immediate Return
The stadium demonstrations coincided with a deepening political crisis in Warsaw following decisions regarding the leadership of the Constitutional Tribunal. Bogdan Święczkowski ceased leading the tribunal and was replaced by Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, whose status is contested by both Święczkowski and the president. The opposition and presidential aides accused the government of a coup d’état, while Donald Tusk framed the actions as part of restoring the rule of law. Karol Nawrocki interrupted a trip to Senegal, returned to Poland, and bypassed a police cordon with State Protection Service officers to enter the tribunal building before issuing a morning statement calling for government forces to leave the area.

Deep-Rooted Ties Between President Nawrocki and Lechia Gdansk
Karol Nawrocki maintains a long-standing association with Lechia Gdańsk and its supporter culture. He first attended matches at the stadium as a child in the 1980s alongside his father and has continued attending games during his presidency. Nawrocki’s connection to the club extends beyond home fixtures, as he was recently spotted in Białystok supporting Polish football during Jagiellonia’s match against Anderlecht in the UEFA Europa League. He has also publicly acknowledged past involvement in organized supporter brawls associated with the club’s fan base.
Unresolved Questions Over Institutional Authority
The open dispute over the leadership of the Constitutional Tribunal remains unsettled as parliamentary groups prepare for stabilization talks called by the president. Questions persist regarding the legal status of the tribunal’s leadership transition and the presence of security forces around the judicial building in Warsaw.
