Kyle Larson Reacts to Martinsville Strategy After Nearing Third Title

Kyle Larson sits on the verge of his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series championship after finishing ninth at Martinsville Speedway on November 1, 2026, surviving a strategy that briefly left him a lap down. William Byron dominated the Xfinity 500 to snap a winless streak.

Kyle Larson Surives Martinsville Strategy Blunder to Maintain Massive Points Lead

Kyle Larson needed to navigate a turbulent afternoon at Martinsville Speedway to protect his championship ambitions. A strategy decision to run long through the opening 130-lap stage without pitting backfired left him a lap down and buried deep in the field outside the top 20.

Larson eventually raced his way back onto the lead lap on Lap 216 and ground out a ninth-place finish. Because his closest rivals failed to capitalize on the trouble, the recovery cost him only six points from his leading margin in the standings. He enters the season finale with a 67-point cushion over Christopher Bell and a 70-point lead over Denny Hamlin.

It was a difficult race. It was just a bummer day. It all could have been a lot worse.

Kyle Larson, Hendrick Motorsports driver

Larson holds a strong historical record at the 1.5-mile asphalt oval in South Florida, featuring progressive banking of 18 to 20 degrees in its turns. Before Phoenix Raceway became the championship site for the past seven seasons, Homestead hosted the season finale from 2002 through 2019. Larson is the defending winner of the event at Homestead, where he won previously in 2022, while Tyler Reddick won in 2024 and Christopher Bell won in 2023. Looking ahead to racing there again, Larson stated his affection for the venue by saying he loves Homestead and considers it a great location for hosting the championship weekend.

William Byron Dominates Xfinity 500 to End Long Winless Drought

While his teammate fought from the back, William Byron put on a masterclass at the 0.526-mile Virginia oval. The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet led 362 of the 500 laps, swept both stages, and claimed his first victory of the 2026 season after a 35-race winless streak.

Byron crossed the finish line 2.049 seconds ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, capping off a dominant organizational sweep at a track where Hendrick holds 32 historical victories. Only seven cars finished on the lead lap as Byron controlled the race through long green-flag stretches.

It’s been a year that you just felt like nothing was going our way. And honestly, I woke up today just thinking, ‘Man, what’s going to happen this time?’

Other notable competitors also recorded strong performances during the Martinsville event. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs ran inside the top five for the majority of the afternoon and crossed the finish line in third place. Wood Brothers driver Josh Berry secured fourth place, while Trackhouse Racing driver Shane van Gisbergen delivered an impressive recovery by starting from the 29th position and climbing all the way to finish fifth. Additional drivers rounding out the top ten included Bubba Wallace, Josh Berry, Todd Gilliland, Tyler Reddick, and Christopher Bell. Following the conclusion of the 500-lap race, post-race inspection was completed in the Cup Series garage with no issues, officially confirming Byron as the Martinsville winner.

Challengers Concede Title Hopes as Homestead Awaits

With only one race remaining on November 8 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Larson’s remaining championship challengers have acknowledged that catching the No. 5 team is mathematically improbable without a catastrophic collapse.

KYLE LARSON POST RACE INTERVIEW AFTER MARTINSVILLE

Denny Hamlin suffered through a similar strategy misstep at Martinsville, staying on track during the first stage and tumbling to 17th before rallying to finish sixth. Hamlin admitted his title bid effectively ended weeks ago, noting that his team simply did not execute to the best of their ability during the Chase.

We needed to be fortysomething back for that to be somewhat viable, but we’ll go there and do the dog and pony show in a week and act like we can do it.

Christopher Bell encountered his own difficulties after receiving a speeding penalty on pit road while running near the front, eventually finishing 10th. Bell noted that his championship defeat happened earlier in the playoff run at tracks like Talladega, Las Vegas, and Gateway rather than at Martinsville.

The Cup Series now shifts to South Florida for the championship finale. Homestead-Miami Speedway returns as the season-ending venue for the first time in seven years, replacing Phoenix Raceway. Larson won the most recent Cup race at the 1.5-mile oval in March 2025.
