Jhon Arias Brace Powers Palmeiras to 6-1 Thrashing of Remo in Brasileirão

Jhon Arias scored twice in the first half Thursday as Palmeiras crushed Remo 6-1 at Nubank Parque in Matchday 34 of the Brasileirão, lifting the São Paulo club to 73 points — three behind leaders Flamengo with four rounds remaining, AS Colombia reported.

Arias needed only 45 minutes to finish as the star of the match.

The Colombian opened the scoring in the fourth minute, collecting a pass from the right, cutting inside after Vitor Roque’s touch, rounding the goalkeeper and rolling the ball into an empty net. Ten minutes later he doubled the lead, arriving unmarked at the far post to finish a low cross from Khellven, according to AS Colombia and El Tiempo. The opener came after Palmeiras recovered possession in midfield, while the second arrived in the 14th minute.

Arias ends a three-month scoring drought

The brace ended a goal drought of roughly three months for Arias, whose previous strike had come in early August in a 3-0 win over Fortaleza, AS Colombia reported. The two goals took him to 10 for Palmeiras this season, six of them in the league, and to 10 goals and six assists in 50 appearances across all competitions in 2026, El Colombiano reported. The Chocó native’s second strike saw him arrive from behind like a classic No. 9 to tap in the cross.

Palmeiras turned the win into a rout in the first half. Maurício made it 3-0 in the 20th minute, and Marcelinho put a fourth past his own goal in the 36th after a lobbed pass from Arias and a cross from Maurício — the goal initially flagged offside but confirmed on review, AS Colombia reported. Marcelinho’s own goal came when he attempted to block Vitor Roque, and Remo pulled one back through Zé Welison in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, tipping a deflected shot past goalkeeper Carlos Miguel.

With the margin comfortable, coach Abel Ferreira rested several starters at halftime; Arias was replaced by José Manuel “Flaco” López, who scored the fifth goal in the 54th minute and later set up Felipe Anderson for the 6-1 in the 79th, ESPN Colombia reported. López struck the fifth from outside the penalty area, taking his tally to 24 goals in 60 matches this year, while Agustín Giay remained on the bench.

Palmeiras sit three points behind Flamengo with four rounds left

The result left Palmeiras second in the table on 73 points, three behind Flamengo’s 76 with four matchdays to play, El Tiempo reported. Palmeiras remain the only team with a mathematical chance of overhauling the reigning Brazilian and Libertadores champions.

The direct clash between the two comes on Nov. 21 and could decide the title, El Colombiano reported. Before that, Palmeiras visit Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte on Nov. 18, ESPN Colombia reported.

The $25 million signing is delivering

Arias, 29, joined Palmeiras from Wolverhampton at the start of 2026 in a deal El Colombiano described as one of the most expensive in Brazilian football history, with the club paying $25 million. Arias had left Fluminense in mid-2025 for Wolverhampton, and the fee made the move one of the most expensive in South American football history.

Copa do Brasil semifinal, Flamengo and the Libertadores final up next

Palmeiras’ next match is Sunday away to Vasco da Gama in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinal, with the tie currently 1-0 to Palmeiras after the first leg, AS Colombia and ESPN Colombia reported. The second leg will be played at São Januário. The season then closes with the Copa Libertadores final against Estudiantes de La Plata on Nov. 28, ESPN Colombia reported.
