Iga Świątek has fallen to ninth place in the latest WTA rankings, a shift confirmed by the tour’s recent update as officials enforced penalties for failing to meet the minimum requirement of six WTA 500 tournament appearances this season. Świątek, who last competed in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open on October 17, saw her point total reduced by 201 points in the November 2 release.
The deduction includes 200 points previously earned during last year’s WTA Finals, alongside a single-point penalty for the missing WTA 500 start. That specific penalty was calculated based on the lowest result from her played tournaments of that tier, which was an opening-round loss at the Bad Homburg Open. Consequently, Świątek swapped positions with Linda Noskova, who now holds the eighth spot. This latest update, which arrived in the early hours of Monday morning to account for the conclusion of the WTA 125 event in Queretaro, shows the Czech player’s advantage over the Pole is now less than 500 points.
Maja Chwalińska and the impact of the Tokyo tournament
The ranking update also saw Maja Chwalińska move down one position to 12th. This change was driven by the performance of Diana Shnaider, who secured a title at the WTA 500 event in Tokyo. That victory earned Shnaider 440 points, allowing her to overtake both Chwalińska and Iva Jović in the standings. While the top of the rankings remains led by Jelena Rybakina, the gap between the Kazakh player and second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka has narrowed.
Shifting dynamics in the WTA Tour
The current situation marks a departure from the period of stability that characterized the tour from April 2022 until late 2024, when Świątek and Sabalenka dominated the rankings. The WTA has highlighted the performance of Mirra Andreeva, who currently sits third in the world and is positioned ahead of both Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Gauff recently moved ahead of Pegula by three points after the latter received a “zero-point” penalty for a missed mandatory event, leaving her season-end standing dependent on her performance in the upcoming finals.
Performance shifts across the Top 100
For other Polish representatives, the latest rankings show a mix of stability and minor movement. Magdalena Fręch maintained her 50th position, while Magda Linette climbed three places to 68th. Katarzyna Kawa experienced a more significant drop, falling nine spots to 115th after being unable to defend points from the previous season in Chennai while skipping the Canton event. Martyna Kubka, currently ranked 145th, continues to track toward a career high following recent shifts in the standings.
Chwalińska plays Billie Jean King Cup before season ends
For Chwalińska, the season is not yet over, as she is scheduled to represent Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup tie against Sweden in Włocławek on November 20–21. The final results of the WTA 250 circuit and the season-ending finals will determine the qualification status for the 2027 Australian Open for players currently hovering outside the top 100.
