One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a mass shooting late Saturday, October 31, 2026, just outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, following the annual Magic City Classic football game, according to Abc3340. The annual college football rivalry game between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University concluded earlier that evening, with Alabama A&M defeating Alabama State 31-28 in the 85th edition of the tournament, as reported by HBCU Gameday.
Tragedy Strikes After Historic Rivalry Game
Birmingham Police Department officers responded after multiple shots rang out in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West shortly after 7:50 p.m., according to details provided by Officer De’Rell Freeman, assistant public information officer for the department. While most spectators and families had already left the stadium property, the gunfire erupted nearby where vendors had set up along Graymont Avenue. Birmingham Fire and Rescue rendered aid to the victims after officers secured the area, per WBRC.
Victim Status and Ongoing Law Enforcement Response
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities confirmed that one person was killed, while the remaining eight wounded victims sustained varying injuries. Early Sunday morning, police updates indicated that one of the shooting victims was listed in critical condition, while seven others were in stable condition, according to Newsweek. Investigators have not yet publicly identified the person who was killed.

Law enforcement personnel recovered multiple firearms from the scene, which were subsequently processed and turned over to the department’s property room. Officers detained one person at the scene and transported them to police headquarters for questioning and processing, though officials have not announced whether that individual has been formally charged or what may have motivated the shooting. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett praised responding officers as true heroes
who ran directly toward the gunfire to triage victims and provide medical assistance while moving toward the source of the shots.
Community Repercussions and Appeal for Information
In response to the violence, the Birmingham Police Department immediately suspended all Magic City Classic tailgating activities. Authorities demanded that everyone leave the stadium property as soon as possible and strongly urged the public to avoid coming to Legion Field while the active investigation continued. Police are working alongside partner agencies, including the FBI, and have requested public assistance. Investigators are asking anyone with video footage from the scene to submit it through an anonymous online evidence portal, or to contact the Birmingham Police Department homicide unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

City and federal leaders expressed grief and outrage over the incident. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin issued a statement declaring, Our community is hurt, shaken and rightfully angry. So am I. There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration.
Woodfin emphasized that city leadership refuses to let fear undermine the community spirit surrounding the historic historically Black college and university (HBCU) tradition. U.S. Representative Terri Sewell also weighed in, stating that the community deserves to celebrate its traditions in peace and safety without the threat of gun violence, while confirming that her office remains in contact with local law enforcement.
