International Children’s Charity Festival Alina Premieres in Mumbai
The Grand Theatre Hosts The Firebird Ballet Production
The International Children’s Charity Festival Alina made its Asian debut at The Grand Theatre inside the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, India, bringing together Russian gymnasts, ballet soloists, and the TODES dance company for a production of Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird.
The project reached Asia for the first time in its 17-year history, filling the Mumbai venue with an audience that included numerous young gymnasts and local fans. The cross-cultural collaboration featured technical and stage design developed jointly by Russian and Indian specialists, following rehearsal periods held in Novogorsk and at the TODES dance theater base in the Moscow region.
Stravinsky Score Accompanied by Live Orchestra Performance
Under the direction of stage director Vyacheslav Kulayev and choreographers Irina Zenovka and Alexander Mogilev, the production gave Stravinsky’s classic ballet score a new theatrical interpretation. For the first time in the festival’s history, the performance was accompanied by live music played by a symphony orchestra led by Russian People’s Artist Valery Gergiev.

World and European rhythmic gymnastics champion Lala Kramarenko starred in the central role of the Firebird, describing the character as an authoritative figure of freedom. She is powerful. She is the Firebird, the bird of freedom,
Kramarenko said. The performance also featured Bolshoi Theatre soloist Daniil Potaptev as Ivan Tsarevich, and TODES and guest Bolshoi soloist Ildar Gaynutdinov as Kashchei the Immortal, alongside 12 TODES soloists performing as Kashchei’s guards.
Artistic Collaboration Bridges Gymnastics and Ballet
The staging merged traditional rhythmic gymnastics elements with classical ballet technique, modern dance, and dramatic storytelling. Rhythmic gymnastics in shows now manifests as art, just like ballet. It is not just a set of elements. It is movement, it is dance, it is plasticity, it is emotions, and above all, it is an image,
Kramarenko explained regarding her 25 to 30 minutes on stage, which included a complex aerial suspension stunt involving a safety belt and a support beam.

Choreographer Irina Zenovka highlighted that the performance incorporated turns, jumps, balances, throws, and risks directly on a theater stage. Daniil Potaptev noted that despite knowing the ballet part and music by heart, the production required new skills: I have to do a little bit of contemporary dance, I even have to hold a ball a little bit,
he shared. World and Russian absolute champion Maria Borisova also adapted to new requirements, mastering duet work with lifts introduced by choreographers and staging directors, after previously perfecting her individual program at Alina Kabaeva’s Sky Grace Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy.
TODES founder and choreographer Alla Duhova praised the collaborative effort, noting that the production allowed dancers and gymnasts to communicate through distinct artistic languages underpinned by symphonic music. More than 160 participants traveled from Russia for the event, joined by members of the Indian national rhythmic gymnastics team.
Public Reception and Foundation Outreach
At the conclusion of the event, Olympic champion and head of the Alina charitable foundation Alina Kabaeva thanked all participants for their dedication, emphasizing the emotional resonance of the performances. Local gymnast Shubhashri Mure expressed admiration for the project, stating that the cross-cultural exchange provides an opportunity for rhythmic gymnastics to expand its reach within India.

The festival delegation continues its cultural engagement schedule in Mumbai following the conclusion of the charity performances.
