Àlex Márquez Undergoes Surgery to Treat Injury After Crash

Àlex Márquez will miss the Qatar Grand Prix after undergoing surgery at the Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid to extract osteosynthesis material from his right collarbone and left hand and undergo an arthroscopic bursectomy in his right shoulder following physical complications stemming from a severe crash at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in May. Following the operation on Monday, the two-time motorcycle champion announced that the procedure went well, stating, The surgery has gone smoothly and my recovery at home now begins. He added, One more step closer to being back at 100%! Márquez also expressed gratitude to the medical staff, noting, I want to give special thanks to Dr. Samuel Antuña and the entire medical team for their work, and concluded with, Thank you all for your affection and for always being there.

The Hospital Ruber Internacional Procedure in Madrid

Dr. Samuel Antuña led the medical team handling the procedure, which concluded without complications. The rider confirmed the intervention last weekend in Sepang, explaining the details of the operation through his social media channels by stating, Yesterday I underwent surgery at the Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid to extract osteosynthesis material in my collarbone and left hand. He further detailed, Additionally, in the same surgical procedure, they performed an arthroscopic bursectomy on my right shoulder. Márquez elaborated on the medical terms, stating, To explain it in a simpler way, they have removed the plates and fixation elements that I was wearing in the collarbone and in the hand. In addition, they have eliminated a small bag from the shoulder that helps prevent friction between the tendons and the joint. This last intervention has been performed through arthroscopy, a minimally invasive technique.

Lingering Sequelae from the Montmeló Incident

Márquez sustained a left collarbone fracture and a C7 vertebra injury during an accident at the Catalan Grand Prix in May while preparing to overtake Pedro Acosta for the race victory when a KTM stalled on the racing line. Emergency surgery in Montmeló initially fixed a collarbone split into four fragments, but the severe impact also affected a right shoulder previously operated on in 2013 due to chronic instability. Ahead of the operation, the rider from Cervera explained his intention to inspect the joint, stating, The intention is to remove the plate from the collarbone and an arthroscopy to remove all the bursitis and really see how the shoulder is.

Scheduling Adjustments for the Portimão Return

The rider considered scheduling the operation following the Indonesian Grand Prix but ultimately chose to bypass Australia before deciding to skip Qatar entirely, noting, I was about to have surgery after Indonesia, but skipping Australia and coming here, with the planes and everything, was not advisable, so it is better to skip Qatar and go to Portimao.
