The Asian Football Confederation has officially postponed the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, moving the tournament from its original January window to late December 2027 amid escalating regional security concerns, CNN Indonesia reported.
Tournament Dates Shifted to Winter 2027
The 19th edition of the quadrennial tournament was originally scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5, 2027. Following extensive consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the Local Organizing Committee, the governing body announced that the competition will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.
Antara News reported that the adjustment stems from escalating conflict in the Middle East between Iran, the United States, and Israel. In its official statement, the governing body cited extraordinary circumstances that created challenges in the organization and execution of the competition.
Tirto.id added that regional instability, including renewed friction between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement dating back to October 2026, contributed to logistical hurdles and potential travel disruptions for participating delegations, officials, and spectators.
Logistical Complexities and Venue Preparations
The tournament format remains unchanged despite the calendar shift. A total of 24 national teams will compete across eight venues located in three Saudi host cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar. The schedule comprises 51 total matches from the group stage through the final, with Riyadh slated to host 31 fixtures.

The governing body confirmed it is formally submitting the revised match calendar to FIFA for final ratification. Administrative coordination will continue alongside commercial partners, broadcasters, and member associations to ensure operational readiness for the rescheduled winter window.
Impact on Indonesia and Group F Opponents
The scheduling shift directly impacts the Indonesia national team, which qualified for the tournament and sits in Group F alongside Japan, Qatar, and Thailand. Antara News noted that the team’s opening fixture pits the squad against Japan.

According to match venue plans outlined by Tirto.id, Indonesia’s group-stage campaign opens against Japan at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah. The team then faces Qatar at the Aramco Stadium in Khobar before closing group play against Thailand at the Stadiun Raja Abdullah, Jeddah.
Pending Approvals and Next Operational Steps
While the new dates are set on paper, full implementation depends on formal sign-off from football’s global governing body. The scheduling adjustments must clear administrative committees at FIFA before ticket sales, broadcast allocations, and team base camps can be finalized.
