The Czech Republic’s U17 national team opened their World Hockey Challenge campaign in Oakville, Ontario, with a 6-4 victory over Canada White, overcoming a two-goal deficit after the first period. The comeback was headlined by 15-year-old forward Dominik Železný, who scored a hat trick during an 11-minute span in the second period.
Despite being the youngest player in the tournament—having turned 15 only this past July—Železný accounted for three of the five goals the Czechs scored in the second frame. Steven Ellis, a respected Canadian journalist specializing in young talent, wrote that it was “a tournament debut!” and praised Železný as the main driving force of the Czech offense, predicting he could finish among the tournament’s most productive players.
Second Period Offensive Surge
The match turned decisively in the middle period. Trailing 2-0 following an early Canadian lead, the Czech side scored five unanswered goals in under 12 minutes of play. The team managed to flip the score within a 123-second window. Dominik Železný initiated the scoring at 28 minutes, followed quickly by Jakub Hladík. Železný added a shorthanded goal shortly thereafter, and Lucas Andrejko extended the lead before Železný completed his hat trick on a power play just before the second intermission. The victory was secured in the final period by Marek Sedláček, despite a late goal from Maverick McKinnon. The Czech roster featured M. Novotný in goal, supported by defenders Dvořák, Michálek, A. Novotný, Jahn, Jonák, Przeczek, and O.

Assistant coach Lukáš Krajíček praised the team’s cohesion during that stretch, noting that the players successfully stifled Canadian offensive pressure. Goaltender Matyáš Novotný defended precisely and protected the lead in the third period. In a final attempt to score, Novotný even tried to hit the empty net with thirty seconds remaining but missed.
Zelezny Accelerates His Development Against Older Players in the Czech Junior System
Železný’s performance at the World Hockey Challenge follows a season of rapid advancement in the Czech junior system. Due to an exemption granted by the national hockey federation, he has been competing for the Bílí Tygři Liberec junior team against players up to five years his senior. Coach Jaromír Pytlík, who has worked with the forward since childhood, noted that playing against players five years older is a very important step in his development. Pytlík recalled that in one season, the teenager recorded 380 points. The coach noted that Železný has already scored approximately twenty “Michigan” goals in domestic youth competitions.

Pytlík compared Železný’s playing style to NHL forward Martin Nečas, highlighting his puck-handling ability and creativity. The teenager is currently being tracked as a long-term prospect for the 2029 NHL Draft.
Tournament Standings and Path to Semifinals
Following the win against Canada White, the Czech squad faced Sweden in their second group stage match on Monday evening. The game ended in a 2-3 shootout loss, with the Czechs earning one point. The Czech U17 team won their group with four total points, securing a direct path to the semifinals.

The match against Sweden saw the Czechs take an early lead through Matyáš Michálek, though the Swedes equalized through Isak Alvudd and later took the lead when Viking Simon tapped in a rebound from a Wersäll shot. Tomáš Albrecht eventually forced overtime with a power-play goal. In the shootout, Jakub Jirota scored for the Czechs, but Joakim Dahl ultimately clinched the win for Sweden. This result mirrors the team’s performance in the previous year’s tournament. By avoiding the quarterfinal stage, the squad earns several days of rest before their next scheduled appearance on Friday, November 6. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Canada White and Finland.

The World Hockey Challenge features two groups, with the top teams advancing to the medal rounds.
