FC Zenit St. Petersburg completed a four-day working visit to Shanghai, playing a friendly match against Shanghai Shenhua while engaging the broader Asian football market during the Russian Premier League break, matchtv.ru reported. The Russian club continues to maintain the most active international schedule among domestic sides following their suspension from official UEFA competitions in the spring of 2022.
Zenit Returns to International Action Against Champions League Opposition
Official international fixtures for Russian clubs ceased in the spring of 2022 due to regulatory sanctions. While industry observers initially anticipated that even friendly matches against foreign opponents would become unfeasible, Zenit became the first Russian side to face a UEFA Champions League participant under the new conditions, hosting Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade at the Gazprom Arena during the 2022–23 summer interseason.
A subsequent fixture took place at the same venue in November 2022 during an international window. By the summer of 2023, St. Petersburg hosted a four-team tournament featuring Red Star Belgrade, Azerbaijan’s Neftchi, and Turkey’s Fenerbahçe. “These games, much like the opponents, did not fall to us from the sky,” Zenit Chairman of the Board Konstantin Zyryanov explained to matchtv.ru. “They are the result of the club’s work in the international arena, which was continuously conducted both before the sanctions against Russian clubs and continued after their introduction.”

Partnership Agreements Drive Global Scheduling Strategy
The groundwork established through international networking yielded official partnership agreements with clubs including Red Star Belgrade and Fenerbahçe. According to club data reported by matchtv.ru, Spanish side Real Betis had also sought to establish a similar partnership agreement with Zenit. By coincidence, Real Betis remains the final European club Zenit faced in official UEFA club competition fixtures prior to the continental ban.
Zenit maintained its status as the most active Russian club in international friendlies over successive interseason windows. During the 2026–27 interseason, the squad contested three international friendlies, matching up against Argentina’s Gimnasia, Uzbekistan’s Neftchi, and Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade.
Shanghai Visit Targets Asian Football Market Development
Ahead of the Russian Super Cup fixture, Zenit officials confirmed plans for the September international window trip to China. The delegation spent four days in Shanghai conducting commercial and sporting meetings alongside the fixture against Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua. Club representatives noted that the expansion into Asian markets developed from long-term strategic planning rather than opportunistic scheduling, treating Asia as a primary region for international partnerships and fixtures outside Europe.
Zenit’s schedule resumes following the completion of the national team break and the delegation’s return to domestic headquarters in St. Petersburg.
