Yomiuri Giants Draft Shoki Oda Despite Major League Intentions
Shoki Oda, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Yokohama High School featuring a 157 km/h fastball, was selected in the first round by the Yomiuri Giants during the 2026 NPB draft on October 22, 2026, creating an immediate question over whether he will sign with the club or pursue a career in Major League Baseball.
The draft selection took place without a lottery, as no other Nippon Professional Baseball franchise entered a first-round bid for the Fukuoka-born prospect. While the Giants hold the exclusive negotiating rights following the uncontested single-team nomination, Oda’s stated preference for American baseball leaves his professional future unresolved. Under NPB regulations, the drafting club must reach a contract agreement with the player by the end of March 2027, or the negotiating rights expire entirely.
Early Baseball Development and Rising Velocity at Yokohama High School
Born on June 3, 2008, in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Oda began playing baseball in elementary school and developed his arm in the soft-ball club at Kitakyushu Municipal Adachi Junior High School, where he reached 143 km/h by his third year. Upon entering Yokohama High School in Kanagawa Prefecture, his velocity climbed significantly. He contributed to the team’s victory in the spring Invitational Tournament during his second year, clocking 156 km/h at Koshien Stadium, before helping lead the squad to a summer quarterfinal appearance and a subsequent semifinal run in his third year.
Recognized for his rapid development on the mound, Oda earned selection to the Japan national team for the U-18 Asian Championship in August 2026. He submitted his professional notification of intent to play on September 17, paving the way for formal interviews with all twelve NPB organizations between October 11 and October 14. However, those meetings were quickly overshadowed by his announcement on October 15 declaring his desire to challenge himself in the United States.

Yomiuri Giants Seek Agreement Before March 2027 Deadline
Following the October 22 draft, the central issue facing the Yomiuri front office is whether they can convince the young pitcher to alter his overseas trajectory and debut in Japan instead. Reports indicate that Oda plans to meet with Major League Baseball organizations following the conclusion of the autumn Kanto tournament. With the NPB contract deadline firmly set for March 31, 2027, the Giants have a narrow window of several months to negotiate an agreement that satisfies the pitcher’s professional ambitions.
As of October 23, 2026, no official agreement has been announced, leaving the outcome of the negotiations uncertain. The Giants selected a total of six players in the main draft and five through developmental picks, but Oda remains the focal point of their 2026 class due to the complications surrounding his major league aspirations. Any official updates regarding a signed contract or a confirmed departure for American baseball will determine whether the club retains its top prospect for the upcoming season.

Dodgers have a very small bonus pool to work with. Unless they somehow convince their top names to take pennies on the dollar, don't see it happening.
