French international guard Yakuba Ouattara has signed with Turkish club Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir, concluding a summer marked by uncertainty over his future, this Tuesday.
The Move to Izmir
At 34 years old, the veteran French perimeter player is heading to Turkey after spending last season with the Paris Basketball. Pinar Karsiyaka officially announced the transaction on Tuesday evening. Local media in Izmir characterized the signing as sensational, noting that Ouattara arrives on the shores of the Aegean Sea as a direct response to an injury sustained by Xavier Munford.
The transfer brings Ouattara to a club with a proud history in Turkish basketball. Pinar Karsiyaka captured the national league championship in 2015 and finished as runners-up in the Basketball Champions League in 2021. However, the club has slipped slightly in domestic hierarchy, finishing 14th in the standings over each of the last two seasons and missing out on European competition for the upcoming campaign.

Reuniting Under Nenad Markovic
Despite the absence of European matches, Pinar Karsiyaka managed to secure a player who had not played outside the EuroLeague since the 2021-22 season. In Izmir, Ouattara will play under head coach Nenad Markovic. The coach is well-known in French basketball circles, having starred for Limoges CSP as a player in the late 1990s and later coaching JDA Dijon between 2021 and 2023.
For Ouattara, a three-time French champion, the move represents a rare stint abroad. Prior to joining the Turkish side, his international experience was limited to a brief stint in the United States disrupted by a severe injury with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2017-18 season, followed by a campaign in Spain with Real Betis Baloncesto in 2020-21.
Reflecting on Paris and Past French Connections
Ouattara arrives in Turkey after providing consistent production for Paris Basketball during the previous season. Across 74 total appearances, he averaged 6.8 points while shooting 41% from the field alongside 2.2 rebounds, marking his most productive statistical output since his time in Andalusia.
With his arrival in Izmir, Ouattara becomes just the third French player in the history of Pinar Karsiyaka. He shares locker-room lineage with the two French players who preceded him at the club. He was teammates with Amath M’Baye in Paris last season, and he previously played alongside Jerry Boutsiele.
