Malagasy Basketball Prospect Thesbon Matazaky Joins USA’s Wilson Academy

Thesbon Matazaky Raolompanantena, a 17-year-old Malagasy prospect and member of the Ankoay U18 national team, has secured a scholarship to join the Wilson Academy in Dallas, Texas.

From French youth leagues to the United States

Matazaky’s path to the United States followed stints in the French youth basketball circuit. He previously competed for Rueil-Malmaison and later played for Charenton Saint-Charles in the U18 Nationale division. This period in France provided the young pivot with exposure to a competitive European environment, serving as a developmental bridge before his recruitment to Texas.

The transition was facilitated by his agent, who helped secure the scholarship necessary for his enrollment at the Wilson Academy. “My agent helped me obtain a scholarship to go to Dallas, in the United States. It is an opportunity to pursue my dreams. I must continue to work to progress,” Matazaky stated regarding his move.

International experience with the Ankoay U18

FIBA statistical records from the Zone 6 qualifiers highlight his efficiency on the floor. Over the course of the competition, Matazaky averaged 12.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 72 percent from the field. His performance was particularly notable in a game against Namibia, where he recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds, showcasing his ability to impact the game near the basket.

Athletic development and academic objectives

At 2.02 meters, Matazaky is focused on enhancing his mobility and tactical understanding of the game.

The move also presents significant personal and academic challenges. Beyond the basketball court, Matazaky is expected to adapt to a new cultural environment, learn English, and manage the academic rigor of an American institution.

Future milestones

As Matazaky settles into his new environment in Dallas, his development remains a long-term project. Born on December 9, 2008, he has time to adjust to the demands of the American game. His progress will be measured by his consistency and his ability to integrate into the structured coaching environment offered by the academy, marking the next stage in a career that has already spanned three countries.
