Xavier’s volleyball team defeated Desert Vista in straight sets on Wednesday, securing a 26-24, 25-19, 25-20 victory at the Thunder’s Storm Center. The win, which keeps the Gators undefeated in 6A Central Region play, was defined by the team’s ability to maintain composure during high-pressure rallies.
Xavier’s Composure Under Pressure
The Gators (11-5, 3-0) overcame a mid-set deficit in the opening frame to establish control, ultimately pulling away from the Thunder. While high school volleyball is often characterized by volatile momentum swings, Xavier coach Lamar-Renee Bryant emphasized that her team’s success stems from a disciplined, calm approach rather than reacting to the chaos of the game.
“When you are dealing with 14- to 18-year-old girls, I can’t create chaos; I have to create calm,” Bryant said. “We have a gameplan and we have to stick with it. We are disciplined. We work really, really hard in practice so no matter what is going on, we have to trust our training and keep our composure.”
Bryant’s strategy included limited use of timeouts, calling only two throughout the entire match. One of those was used early in the first set when Desert Vista (27-7, 3-1) held a 16-14 lead. By allowing the players to handle those moments on the floor, the coaching staff reinforced trust in the team’s preparation, according to junior captain and middle blocker Annabelle Ross.
“It starts with our preparation in practice because we all have belief in our abilities,” Ross said. “We all know what we are capable of and holding each other accountable.”

Desert Vista’s Performance in Transition
For Desert Vista, the match marked a difficult outing in what has otherwise been a strong season under first-year coach Kris Maglunog. The Thunder, a program with a storied history currently working to move past three consecutive losing seasons, struggled to match Xavier’s consistency after a competitive start.
Maglunog, who previously led Horizon Honors to a state title in 2016, noted that his team appeared to struggle with the psychological challenge of facing a high-profile opponent. “I think maybe we got too much in our heads thinking about what the other team is doing, who they have and how they are swinging,” Maglunog said. “It took us out of our game and we never really recovered. We were competitive, and there was some good things that happened, but we didn’t do enough to beat a team like Xavier.”
Despite the loss, the Thunder remain successful in the early stages of their schedule, having won 27 of their first 34 matches. Maglunog pointed to the team’s unity as a primary asset as they prepare for the upcoming Nike tournament.
Upcoming Competition Schedules
Following Wednesday’s region action, Desert Vista shifts its focus to the annual Nike tournament, an event the program uses to test its growth against high-level competition. Xavier, meanwhile, continues its 6A Central Region schedule, building on its current 3-0 record.

“Success isn’t always measured with victories alone, but we’ve been able to play at a high level so far,” Maglunog said. “We have some things we need to work on, but we’re off to a pretty good start.”
