An under-bridge urban space in Wuhan has been transformed into a 12,200-square-meter sports park featuring professional courts and a high reservation rate.
Urban planners and municipal operators are increasingly turning neglected zones into athletic facilities. The site beneath the Wuhan Erqi Yangtze River Bridge, once an untidy corner that posed environmental upkeep challenges, now operates as a public fitness hub. The project advances the city’s 12-minute fitness circle initiative by delivering recreational access directly into densely populated urban sectors, according to municipal records.
Wuhan Erqi Bridge Under-Bridge Park Sets High Utilization Records
The facility spans approximately 1.22 hectares and divides into distinct functional sectors, including public exercise zones, professional athletic courts, and smart parking structures. Outdoor basketball courts, open-air table tennis tables, and a central service building operate without charge for local residents. Enclosed structures accommodate tennis, badminton, and indoor table tennis to service various age groups.
Management data shows strong early demand following a soft launch in early September. The tennis complex recorded over two thousand visits during its initial operational phase, while court reservation rates surpassed 90 percent throughout the National Day holiday period. Officials with the Wuhan Urban Construction Investment and Operation Group reported that pre-construction surveys identified heavy community demand for parking and recreation among nearby schools, residential towers, and corporate offices. Designers utilized the varying vertical clearance beneath the bridge deck to arrange athletic halls in high-clearance zones while assigning parking lots and leisure strips to lower-clearance areas.
Commercial Retail Expands Along Sports Infrastructure
Retail operations have established a foothold inside the sports zone to service visiting athletes and neighborhood residents. A boutique coffee shop owner invested tens of thousands of yuan into the location after analyzing demographic data and consumer traffic patterns in the immediate vicinity. The storefront recorded substantial foot traffic upon opening during the autumn holiday break.
Current commercial tenants include a burger shop and a convenience store alongside the café. Representatives from the Jiang’an District Urban Management Law Enforcement Bureau stated that local authorities intend to expand commercial and cultural tourism integrations within bridge infrastructure, aiming to stimulate economic activity through multi-use public land management.
National Sports Bureaucracy Drives Nationwide Facility Conversions
The national 15th Five-Year Plan for sports power development mandates the expansion of public fitness infrastructure. Municipalities across the country are converting idle land parcels, abandoned industrial plants, and aging parks into structured athletic venues to build diverse fitness networks.
The Beijing Shougang Industrial Heritage Park repurposed a former steel manufacturing complex into a multi-use sports destination. The site incorporates the Shougang Big Air ramp and converted blast furnaces alongside training venues for national winter sports disciplines, including curling, ice hockey, figure skating, and short-track speed skating.
In Tianjin, the Hexi District Children’s Sports Park transformed an outdated green space by installing standardized ball courts and digital fitness equipment that allows visitors to engage in multi-player simulated competitions via large electronic displays. Chengdu authorities in Sichuan province converted a neglected vacant urban lot into the Lidou Park, adding basketball, badminton, tennis, and table tennis facilities alongside community-focused orienteering paths.
Shandong province established the 0533 Sports Park in Huantai County on the grounds of a decommissioned thermal power plant. The facility features natural and artificial turf soccer fields that have hosted over 950 matches, generating millions of yuan in auxiliary revenue for local dining and lodging providers. Jiangsu province converted a downtown athletic ground into the 35,330-square-meter Zhenjiang Health Road Sports Park, which hosts basketball, fencing, Go, badminton, and table tennis venues alongside retail and hospitality concessions. In Ningxia, the Helan Mountain Sports Leisure Park in Yinchuan converted an abandoned mining pit into a 1,200-mu green zone that supports local hospitality and restaurant economies.
