For the first time in 28 years, no Chinese table tennis player holds a position in the top three of the ITTF world men’s singles rankings. The latest standings, released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on October 5, show that long-time world number one Wang Chuqin dropped to fourth place.
Wang Chuqin Misses Five Major WTT Tournaments
The slide in the rankings follows Wang Chuqin’s absence from the China Smash, one of the five premier Grand Smash events on the professional calendar. Due to his withdrawal, the 25-year-old athlete was penalized with a deduction of 2,000 points from his ITTF total. According to reporting from the Vietnamese outlet Tuoi Tre, Wang has participated in very few events recently, having skipped five major WTT tournaments throughout 2026, including both the Europe Smash and the China Smash.
While the Chinese Table Tennis Association has not issued an official statement regarding his status, international media and social media reports suggest the player has been managing an injury for approximately a year. Following the point deduction, Wang’s total fell to 6,157 points, moving him out of the top three for the first time in his tenure as the nation’s top-ranked player.

New Global Leaders in Men’s Singles
The redistribution of points has elevated three international players to the top of the ITTF rankings. Nineteen-year-old Japanese athlete Sora Matsushima has moved into the number one position with 6,930 points, becoming one of the youngest non-Chinese players to reach the top spot in the sport’s modern history. She is followed by France’s Felix Lebrun, who holds the second position with 6,379 points, and Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto, who sits third with 6,363 points.
Historical Context and Future Outlook for Chinese Table Tennis
The path to recovery for the Chinese team remains uncertain. Wang Chuqin is expected to remain sidelined from WTT tournaments for the coming months as he continues his recovery. Meanwhile, Lin Shidong, currently the highest-ranked Chinese player after Wang, is positioned in ninth place.
