Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany believes Sander Berge possesses the qualities required for the European elite, singling out the Norwegian midfielder for his talent and character ahead of a UEFA Champions League fixture against Viking Stavanger.
Praise Ahead of Champions League Fixture
Kompany worked with Berge for a season during their time together at Burnley before taking charge at the German powerhouse. Speaking in the buildup to Wednesday’s European away match in Norway, the former Manchester City defender argued that the 28-year-old midfielder flies under the radar.
“He is really, really underestimated,” Kompany said. “I have the privilege to currently work with some of the best players in Europe. He has always had the quality to play at this level.”
Berge currently plays for Fulham, having secured a permanent midfield role with the Premier League club following a transfer in 2024. Wednesday’s match brought Kompany back to his former player’s home country as Bayern Munich prepared to face Viking Stavanger.
Early Development in Belgium
Before establishing himself in English football, Berge built his reputation in the Jupiler Pro League with KRC Genk. He arrived in Belgium in January 2017 as an 18-year-old after moving from Norwegian club Vålerenga, quickly locking down a central role in the Limburg squad.

During the 2018-19 campaign, Berge featured prominently as Genk claimed the Belgian league title under manager Philippe Clement. That tenure provided the midfielder with valuable exposure to continental competition before his subsequent moves to the English leagues.
In January 2020, Berge transferred to Sheffield United. He later joined Burnley in the summer of 2023 when Kompany brought him to Turf Moor for a fee approaching 14 million euros. Following a single campaign under the Belgian coach, Berge moved on to Fulham.
Overcoming Injury Setbacks
According to Kompany, injuries arriving at inopportune moments and difficult spells at various clubs have occasionally hindered the midfielder’s trajectory. Despite those hurdles, the Bayern coach maintains that Berge’s underlying abilities place him among Europe’s top tier.

“In terms of quality, talent, and personality, he can belong among the best players in European football,” Kompany said. “What you can learn from his story is that you must never give up. Eventually, doors open.”
Now 28 years old, Berge has earned numerous senior international caps for the Norway national team.
