Valentin Vacherot Defends Shanghai Masters Title With Career-Best ATP Ranking
One year after capturing an improbable title against his cousin Arthur Rinderknech at the Shanghai Masters 1000, Valentin Vacherot has returned to China to begin his defense ranked 14th in the world. Speaking to Agence France-Presse ahead of his opening match, the 27-year-old Monégasque tennis player stated that he no longer has anything left to prove on the professional tour.
Back in 2025, Vacherot sat well outside the top 200 in the ATP rankings and only gained entry into the Shanghai qualifying rounds at the eleventh hour following a wave of late withdrawals. Twelve months later, his journey from qualifier to champion has solidified into a permanent ascent. Alongside his breakthrough in China, he secured his maiden Grand Slam match victories and reached the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters in April.
Entering the Elite Tier of Men’s Professional Tennis
Reflecting on his transformation from an unheralded competitor to the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 winner since the tournament category’s inception in 1990, Vacherot acknowledged that his status within the locker room has shifted dramatically. He noted that he now practices alongside the sport’s premier competitors and performs in front of capacity crowds on a regular basis.

The perspective of his peers has undergone a complete evolution. Where opponents once overlooked him due to a lack of familiarity, he is now a targeted opponent. Despite failing to capture a second ATP singles trophy since his triumph in Shanghai, the big-serving right-hander remains firmly established among the world’s elite.
Managing a Star-Studded Shanghai Draw
Seeded 17th and receiving a first-round bye, Vacherot is scheduled to begin his tournament campaign on Saturday. His opening test will come against either Argentine competitor Sebastian Baez, ranked 53rd, or American player Marcos Giron, ranked 88th.
Replicating last year’s run will present significant challenges. The tournament field features world No. 2 Alexander Zverev alongside former circuit leaders Carlos Alcaraz, ranked third, and Novak Djokovic, ranked eighth. Vacherot recalled that his previous title run benefited from avoiding players like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, though his path did require him to eliminate both Djokovic and Holger Rune.
Vacherot Targets Top 30 Spot for Australian Open
Beyond the ongoing tournament in Shanghai, Vacherot maintains distinct competitive targets for the remainder of the season and beyond. In September, he successfully led Monaco through Davis Cup competition to secure a spot among the elite global nations competing for the title in 2027.

For the remainder of the current calendar, he intends to compete at events in Lyon from October 19 to 25, Basel from October 26 to November 1, and the Paris Masters from November 2 to 8. Maintaining a position inside the top 30 remains essential to securing a seeded spot at the upcoming Australian Open.
Looking further ahead to 2027, Vacherot has targeted grass-court competition for personal redemption.
