US President Donald Trump highlighted the unusual diplomatic channel of former NBA star Dennis Rodman during a public appearance, pointing to Rodman’s past visits to North Korea as his initial method for understanding North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The remarks came on Dec. 1 at the Peterbilt Motors truck plant in Denton, Texas, as part of a wider presidential event reported by Herald Corporation.
Dennis Rodman and the Kim Jong Un Connection
Addressing the crowd in Texas, President Trump pointed out Rodman in attendance, describing him as a basketball legend, the greatest rebounder in basketball history, and a longtime friend. When Trump wanted to learn more about Kim Jong Un during a period of intense bilateral tension, he discovered that the person who knew the North Korean leader best was Rodman, who had traveled to Pyongyang five times to meet Kim and his family through a shared interest in basketball.
Recalling that era of strained relations, Trump noted that while things were difficult at the time, he and Kim now get along well. Although the president did not elaborate on whether he directly consulted Rodman for advice on North Korean leadership, the appearance brought renewed attention to the athlete’s unorthodox diplomatic footprint.
Trump Discusses Rodman Assisting North Korean Basketball Team
Rodman’s visits to North Korea included direct interactions with the country’s basketball program. Trump mentioned that North Korean officials had asked Rodman to visit and assist their basketball team. Characterizing the local squad, Trump remarked that they were not particularly skilled at the time, adding a lighthearted comment that he was unsure how much help Rodman provided and suggesting the former Chicago Bulls star would have had to actually play on the court to make a difference.

During his first term, Trump shifted from severe diplomatic friction with North Korea in 2017 to holding three summits with Kim between 2018 and 2019. Since entering his second term, the US president has maintained an openness toward resuming direct communication with Pyongyang.
Trump and Lee Jae-Myung Agree on US Investment Project
Alongside his remarks on basketball diplomacy in Texas, Trump addressed broader international economic engagements. He confirmed recent discussions with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in New York, stating that the two leaders reached an agreement to initiate a 2000 billion-dollar US investment project backed by South Korea, according to Herald Corporation.
