Teikyo Nagaoka and Kanazawa Reach Hokushinetsu Final

Teikyo Nagaoka and Kanazawa advanced to the final of the autumn Hokushin-etsu high school baseball tournament, securing their positions as top contenders for berths in the 99th National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament next spring.

Teikyo Nagaoka Relies on Ace Kudo in Semifinal Victory

Teikyo Nagaoka, entering the tournament as the top-seeded team from Niigata, defeated Toyama Shogyo 4–2 in the semifinal round. Manager Hiroshi Shibakusa’s squad broke open a tight game in the fourth inning when freshman pinch-hitter Yudai Uchiyama and Ren Hirota hit consecutive run-scoring singles to establish a 2–0 lead. Uchiyama added another RBI single in the sixth inning to cushion the advantage.

Left-handed ace Ichiro Kudo pitched a complete-game victory for Teikyo Nagaoka, throwing 159 pitches over nine innings. He surrendered two runs—only one of which was earned—on six hits and four walks while striking out five batters. The outing marked Kudo’s third complete-game win since the tournament’s opening round.

The victory keeps Teikyo Nagaoka on track for a return to the national invitational tournament. Earlier this year, the school made its first appearance at Koshien across both spring and summer competitions, though the team subsequently dropped the summer prefectural final to Nippon Bunri.

Kanazawa Edges Tsuruga Kehi to Reach Final

In the other semifinal, Ishikawa’s second-seeded Kanazawa secured a 2–1 win over Fukui third-seed Tsuruga Kehi. Kanazawa right-handed starting pitcher Naito Kuno ran into early trouble in the second inning, giving up consecutive hits capped by an RBI double that put Tsuruga Kehi ahead.

Kanazawa erased the deficit in the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on second base, Sota Anzai drove a triple to bring home the tying run. Teammate Kosuke Sawano followed with an immediate run-scoring single to give Kanazawa a 2–1 advantage.

Despite yielding eight hits and issuing seven walks, Kuno navigated traffic on the base paths effectively from the third inning onward. He relied on defense and key pitches to complete 139 pitches across nine innings, striking out three to seal the narrow victory.

The result moves Kanazawa within reach of its first Koshien appearance since the summer tournament in 2011. A victory in the upcoming final would mark the program’s 10th selection to the spring invitational, with their last spring appearance occurring in 2011.

Selection Framework for the Spring Invitational

The autumn Hokushin-etsu tournament serves as a primary evaluation when determining the participants for the spring national showcase. The Hokushin-etsu region has been allocated two direct qualification slots for the tournament.

The 32-school field for the spring showcase consists of 29 teams chosen through general selection. Additional pathways include two berths allocated via the 21st-century framework—which highlights teams overcoming difficult regional circumstances—and one traditional quota reserved for the district representing the Meiji Jingu tournament champion.

The tournament committee is scheduled to convene on January 29, 2021, followed by the tournament’s pairing draw on March 5, 2021. The competition itself is slated to run for 13 days, opening on March 19, 2021, and concluding on March 31, 2021.
