Tsuruga Kehi Advances as Fukui Teams Compete in Hokuriku Baseball Tournament

The 155th Hokuriku Regional High School Baseball Tournament opened on October 10 across three ballparks in Niigata Prefecture, serving as a vital selection qualifier for next spring’s National Invitational High School Baseball Tournament. Three teams traveled from Fukui Prefecture to compete in the opening round, but only Tsuruga Kehi managed to advance past the initial hurdle, securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

First-Round Results Across Niigata Venues

Play unfolded simultaneously across three distinct venues under crisp autumn conditions. At Sanjo Pearl Metal Stadium, Komatsu Otani defeated Saku Seishu 10-3 in the first matchup. In the second game at the same venue, Takaoka Shogyo overcame Fukui Commercial 9-2. Takaoka Daiichi rounded out the Sanjo slate by edging Tokyo Gakkan Niigata 2-1.

Meanwhile, across town at Hard Off ECO Stadium Niigata, Teikyo Nagaoka eliminated Seiryo with a 5-3 victory. Tsuruga Kehi provided the lone bright spot for Fukui’s contingent at the venue, slipping past Ueda Nishi 2-1. Kanazawa also advanced at the Niigata stadium, defeating Nippon Bunri 7-3.

At Nagaoka City Yukyuyama Baseball Ground, Toyama Shogyo topped Nagaoka 6-2, and Matsumoto Shogaku eliminated Hokuriku 7-3.

Fukui Contenders Fall Short in Opening Games

Fukui Prefecture entered the regional tournament with high expectations, led by prefectural champion Fukui Commercial and runner-up Hokuriku. Neither team survived the opening day of competition. Fukui Commercial fell behind early against Takaoka Shogyo, unable to overcome a deficit despite late offensive pushes. Hokuriku saw its touted pitching staff unravel in the late innings against Matsumoto Shogaku, allowing four runs in the final frame to seal a 7-3 exit.

Tsuruga Kehi, entering the bracket as Fukui’s third seed, avoided the regional sweep. The team relied on a disciplined pitching performance from its captain paired with timely hitting to edge Ueda Nishi by a single run, securing the prefecture’s sole remaining spot in the next round of the tournament.

Tournament Schedule and Reporting Framework

The regional tournament acts as the primary evaluation metric for the Japan High School Baseball Federation when determining berths for the spring national invitational tournament. With the first round concluded on October 10, surviving programs prepare for quarterfinal matchups across the host prefecture.
