Hong Kong ended a medal drought at the BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo as boys’ doubles pair Michaelangle Njoto and Jerry Yu alongside girls’ singles player Ip Sum Yai secured bronze medals.
Hong Kong Secures First Junior World Medals Since 2010
Hong Kong secured its first podium finishes at the BWF World Junior Championships since the 2010 edition in Guadalajara. The breakthrough came through boys’ doubles pair Michaelangle Njoto and Jerry Yu, who captured bronze to replicate the feat last achieved by Lee Chun Hei and Ng Ka Long.
Ip Sum Yai expanded the delegation’s success by claiming a second bronze medal in the girls’ singles tournament. The result marks the first time a Hong Kong player has medaled in the event at the World Junior Championships.
Coaching Staff Praises Resilience After Cairo Podium Finishes
Doubles coach Tan Bin Shen credited the players’ sustained commitment for the results achieved in Egypt. In a social media post addressing the squad, Bin Shen emphasized that reaching the podium reflected years of rigorous preparation.
“Standing on the podium is the result of all the training and perseverance you have shown along the way,” Bin Shen stated in his online remarks. “This medal is not just about the result, but also proof that you had the courage to challenge yourselves.”
Bin Shen also outlined expectations for the team’s ongoing development, urging the young athletes to treat the achievement as a foundational step rather than a peak. “The competition may be over, but the learning never stops. Every tournament gives us something to learn and improve on, while every challenge helps us become stronger,” he added.
Training Structure Under Bin Shen and Wong Choong Hann
The coaching infrastructure behind Hong Kong’s junior success combines prominent regional expertise. Alongside Tan Bin Shen overseeing the doubles pairs, former Malaysian international Wong Choong Hann directs the team’s singles program as head coach.
Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Bin Shen maintained that the squad must maintain its trajectory despite the milestone. “The road ahead will be tougher, and that is why we have to keep pushing ourselves and continue breaking through our own limits. Believe in yourselves and you will become even stronger,” he noted.
The 2010 tournament in Guadalajara marked the previous high-water mark for Hong Kong’s junior program, when Lee Chun Hei and Ng Ka Long secured the association’s last medals prior to the Cairo championships.
