Taisei Marukawa pursues Indonesian citizenship to represent national team, detiksport reports

Taisei Marukawa is pursuing Indonesian citizenship after five seasons playing in the country’s top-tier football leagues, with the ultimate ambition of representing the national team, detiksport reported. The Dewa United midfielder has submitted the required documentation and awaits final approval from relevant authorities.

Five Years in Indonesian Football

Marukawa arrived in Indonesian football five years ago, building a career that has established him as a familiar face in Liga 1. Speaking through a club statement released on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, at Dewa United Arena, the 29-year-old Japanese player confirmed that his naturalization papers are currently under review. While he declined to discuss the administrative steps in detail, he emphasized that the paperwork is moving forward.

“I cannot explain the process in detail, but I have submitted the necessary documents and am currently waiting for approval,” Marukawa stated in the release.

Affection for Local Culture

The decision to pursue citizenship stems from Marukawa’s personal experiences living and working in Indonesia over the past half-decade. The player, who wears the number 11 shirt, pointed to the widespread hospitality of local residents as a primary factor in his comfort and happiness abroad.

“I have lived in Indonesia for five years and truly fell in love with this country,” Marukawa said. “Everyone is very friendly, and spending time in Indonesia makes me feel happy. I really like the kindness and hospitality of the Indonesian people. Because of that, I am very comfortable living here.”

Ambition for the National Team

If the naturalization process reaches completion, Marukawa intends to make himself available for selection by the Indonesian national team.

“My biggest dream is to be part of the Indonesian National Team,” he said. “Being able to play for Indonesia would be a very huge honor for me.”

Next Steps in the Naturalization Timeline

Marukawa currently retains Japanese citizenship while his application moves through government channels.
