Gareth Batty Leaves Surrey for Chennai Super Kings

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty has stepped down from his post to join Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach for the tournament’s 2027 season. The move brings an immediate close to a 21-year association with Surrey that spanned two playing stints, the club captaincy, and a successful tenure in the dugout.

Batty took charge as head coach in 2022 and immediately steered the county to three consecutive County Championship titles, a feat not accomplished in nearly six decades. In addition to the red-ball dominance, Surrey reached the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast in all five years of his tenure, including two appearances at Finals Day.

Alec Stewart and Gareth Batty Praise a Historic Tenure at The Oval

Director of Cricket Alec Stewart praised the outgoing coach’s deep commitment to the club, noting that the IPL opportunity offered a chance for Batty to spend more time with his family outside of the tournament window. Stewart paid tribute to Batty’s career in south London.

Batty expressed his gratitude to the club and specifically thanked Stewart for his support throughout their years together. He reflected on the people who shaped his time in south London.

Clubs are built on more than results and trophies; they are built on people, loyalty and a shared sense of purpose, and I look forward to my third chapter as a fan. Thank you.

Two Decades of Service Across Playing, Captaincy, and Coaching Roles

Batty’s connection to Surrey dates back to 1998, when he first joined the club after leaving Yorkshire. Following a stint with Worcestershire, he returned to The Oval in 2010 and earned his county cap a year later in 2011. He captained the side from 2015 to 2017 before handing leadership duties to current skipper Rory Burns.

Over his playing career, Batty made more than 350 appearances for Surrey, taking upwards of 500 wickets across all formats and finishing as the club’s joint-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket. He also represented England in 20 international matches, including nine Tests. Upon retiring from playing in 2021, Batty immediately joined Surrey’s coaching staff before stepping into the top job.

Chennai Super Kings Staff Restructuring for the 2027 Season

The appointment at Chennai Super Kings follows other coaching changes within the franchise. The five-time IPL champions previously brought in former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach, with former fast bowler Mohit Sharma also slated to join the staff as bowling coach. Batty joins this setup as an assistant coach, stepping into the T20 league after a stellar domestic run in England.
