Sumitomo Rubber Industries: Higashiyama Park Tennis Center Installs DecoTurf

Nagoya’s Higashiyama Park Tennis Center has installed DecoTurf hardcourt surfaces across all 19 of its courts, featuring a solar-reflective topcoat designed to mitigate surface temperature spikes during the peak of summer, according to a corporate announcement from Sumitomo Rubber Industries.

Higashiyama Park Tennis Center Installs DecoTurf Across 19 Courts

The municipal facility in Nagoya completed the installation of the DecoTurf hardcourt system on all 19 of its courts, utilizing the COOLTOP solar-reflective topcoating material sold and installed by Sports Surface Co., a group company of Sumitomo Rubber Industries, doing business as Dunlop. The project, commissioned by the City of Nagoya, aims to establish a more manageable playing environment for athletes during periods of high ambient heat by curbing the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the court floor.

DecoTurf maintains the highest cumulative installation area of any hardcourt surface in the domestic Japanese market, according to Sumitomo Rubber Industries data. The surface system is utilized across international tournament venues, public parks, private tennis clubs, and educational facilities, recognized for maintaining consistent ball bounce characteristics and durability under heavy recreational and competitive play.

COOLTOP Solar-Reflective Technology Lowers Surface Temperatures

Every court within the 19-court complex features the COOLTOP topcoat, which incorporates chemical compounds designed to elevate solar reflectance by 20 to 30 percent compared to conventional acrylic tennis surfaces. By reflecting a higher volume of solar radiation, the coating reduces thermal buildup on the court floor, allowing players to utilize the facility under reduced surface heat conditions during warmer months.

The COOLTOP material holds formal product category registration with the International Tennis Federation, verifying that the reflective topcoat meets established criteria for competitive tennis play without altering the functional bounce and traction properties required by governing bodies.

Sports Surface Co. Prepares for Integration Under Dunlop Fields

The execution of the Nagoya project builds on technical qualifications earned by Sports Surface Co., which became the first entity in Japan to secure a “Two Star” quality recognition rating from the International Tennis Federation in 2021 for a DecoTurf installation at Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo. That rating acknowledged the firm’s precision grading techniques and quality control measures used to correct surface irregularities on hardcourt installations.
