Between September 2025 and July 2026, university student Mizuki undertook a study abroad program in Cergy, France, attending CY Cergy Paris Université to examine French language, culture, and environmental issues, according to an official Tobitate! Study Japan report.
Academic Life at CY Cergy Paris Université
During the stay in Cergy, the curriculum centered on core French language acquisition alongside cultural studies and modern environmental policy. The student noted that CY Cergy Paris Université hosts a substantial population of students with roots in Francophone Africa. This demographic makeup offered direct exposure to diverse societal perspectives and underscored the historical ties linking France to Francophone African nations.
Bridging Japan and Francophone Africa Through Judo
Before arriving in France, the primary objective was connecting Japan and Africa through educational and athletic initiatives. Recognizing limited direct exchange avenues between the two regions, the project utilized France as a strategic base due to its deep historical connections with both territories. Judo served as the primary medium for cultural exchange, leveraging a shared martial arts tradition to build relationships with local communities. Activities included hosting a Japanese language and culture workshop at a local junior high school.
Collecting and Sorting Disused Judo Uniforms
The operational core of the project involved gathering discarded judo uniforms from clubs and organizations across France. Initial plans focused on supporting a single region, but as the initiative expanded, the strong ties between France and Francophone Africa became evident. By incorporating aid for Francophone African nations into the project scope, the initiative gained traction among local volunteers and contributors. Securing participation required sustained outreach over several months, demonstrating that international cooperation demands meticulous coordination and adaptation to local realities rather than abstract ideals.
Shifting Cultural Perspectives
Living abroad reshaped long-held assumptions regarding societal norms. Interacting daily with peers from diverse backgrounds prompted a critical reexamination of practices traditionally viewed as universal in Japan. This environment fostered a balanced perspective, encouraging the acceptance of external viewpoints while maintaining an appreciation for one’s own cultural foundation.
