Ten basketball legends entered the Spanish Basketball Hall of Fame during a ceremony in La Línea de la Concepción. The sixth induction gala gathered figures from across the sport’s history in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz).
Golden Basketballs Awarded to Ten Icons in Cádiz
The event celebrated contributors, players, coaches, and referees who shaped Spanish basketball. Elisa Aguilar, president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), marked her birthday during the evening as recipients received their golden basketballs. The ceremony enjoyed backing from CaixaBank, the Ayuntamiento de La Línea, and the Diputación de Cádiz, shifting locations after previous editions in Seville and Lleida. Our Hall of Fame started in 2019 with the collaboration of the Spanish Federation and AS, and with the ten icons of this batch, welcomed by La Línea de la Concepción, the Hall of Fame grows. With the Bay of Gibraltar on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other, the ten new members of this club of legends received the golden ball and the tribute to a great career.
Posthumous Honor and Tributes for Piculín Ortiz
The late Puerto Rican star Piculín Ortiz entered the Hall of Fame posthumously following his death on May 5 at age 62 in San Juan. Sylvia Ríos, his widow, accepted the golden basketball on stage and thanked Spain and the clubs where her husband played. Former teammate Alfonso Reyes remembered Ortiz as someone who “illuminated any place he was in,” while Real Madrid noted the center’s stint during the 1989-1990 season. Ortiz previously earned selection to the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2019 after a career spanning the ACB, two seasons with the Utah Jazz, and four Olympic Games with Puerto Rico. Elisa Aguilar said during the ceremony that he left an indelible mark on Spanish basketball. Sylvia Ríos called it surreal to receive an award that is not one’s own, while Diario AS director José Félix Díaz noted that he was especially moved when Piculín passed away and by the response of all the teams he played for.

Alberto Herreros and Real Madrid Legends Recognized
Alberto Herreros joined the class alongside fellow Real Madrid and Estudiantes figures. Real Madrid’s official club site detailed Herreros’s arrival from Estudiantes in 1996 and his nine seasons with the club, highlighted by a championship-winning shot in 2005 against TAU Cerámica. Herreros holds the all-time Liga Endesa records for total points with 9,759 and three-pointers made with 1,233. Cristóbal Rodríguez, who balanced a medical career with playing for Real Madrid and the national team in the 1960s and 1970s, entered in the contributor category alongside the Club Baloncesto Avenida. With the Spanish national team, Herreros played 172 matches and won silver medals at the 1999 and 2003 European Championships.
Club Baloncesto Avenida Makes History for Women’s Basketball
The Club Baloncesto Avenida entered the Hall of Fame as a contributor, marking the first time a women’s club receives the distinction. Club president Jorge Recio called the milestone historic for Salamanca and the sport. Alongside the club, Silvia Domínguez—who finished her career with nine medals and whose name adorns her home pavilion in Salamanca—entered alongside fellow player Anna Junyer, coach Mario Pesquera, and referee Daniel Hierrezuelo.
