12th Pick Aday Mara: The New ‘Unicorn’ of Spanish Basketball

Aday Mara has emerged as Spanish basketball’s newest unicorn following two standout preseason games with the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging high production and showing the unique blend of size, skill, and court vision that caught the attention of scouts across Europe and the United States, according to La Vanguardia.

Preseason Production With The Oklahoma City Thunder

The 21-year-old from Zaragoza entered the NBA after being selected 12th overall in the NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. His early preseason minutes in the league yielded immediate statistical impact. In his second preseason contest, Mara scored 22 points, converting all ten of his field goal attempts in a 128-126 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, adding seven dunks in the first half alone alongside six rebounds, two assists, and one block across 25 minutes of play. That performance followed an initial 12-point outing in his first preseason appearance.

Before his transition to the NBA, Mara played collegiate basketball in the United States. He began his American career at UCLA during the 2023 season, where limited playing time and a tactical mismatch under coach Mick Cronin hampered his development. He subsequently transferred to Michigan, where head coach Dusty May helped revitalize his trajectory. That bounce-back season culminated in an NCAA championship with Michigan, making Mara the sole Spanish player to capture an American collegiate basketball title.

Early Development In Zaragoza And Elite Debut

Born in the La Jota neighborhood of Zaragoza, Mara initially pursued association football and wanted to play as a goalkeeper like Iker Casillas. Athletic genes ran in his family; his father, Javier Mara, stood 2.01 meters tall and played for CAI Zaragoza in the ACB, while his mother, Geli Gómez, stood 1.90 meters tall and represented the Spanish national volleyball team in more than 170 international matches. Javier Mara eventually convinced his son to switch to basketball. Aday Mara started playing at Club Lupus in Zaragoza before joining the youth system at Casademont Zaragoza.

Jorge Samper, a youth coach who helped scout Mara at age 11, recalled the player’s early years. He was a shy boy because he was very tall and felt embarrassed because he drew attention, Samper noted, adding that Mara’s floor vision and shooting range were apparent even during his cadet and infantil categories. His physical structure changed all the time due to growth.

Jaume Ponsarnau, then head coach of Casademont Zaragoza and currently leading Surne Bilbao, gave Mara his debut in the elite at age 16 during a FIBA Europe Cup match against Reggio Emilia in 2021. Everybody told me, ‘You’ll see, he’s very good,’ Ponsarnau said. When they bring you a kid like that, the opposite usually happens… but with him it happened the other way around. We saw that he had great talent. He was gangly and had to build himself up physically, but he was able to contribute even in difficulty.

Future Leadership Role For The Spanish National Team

Spanish national team head coach Chus Bueno recently handed Mara his debut with the senior national team during an international window. He has worked hard and promises to be someone important, Bueno stated. Ponsarnau echoed those expectations regarding Mara’s capacity to anchor the next generation of Spanish basketball following the retirement of the golden generation led by Pau Gasol. Now he is already an enormous player, Ponsarnau said. He can be the leader of the new generation of Spanish basketball, but we must not do anything special or force things for him to be. He has to follow his evolution naturally because he has the conditions.

Ponsarnau emphasized Mara’s unselfish tactical fit: He makes the teams he is on better because of the amount of things he can contribute. Defensively through his intimidation and offensively, through his height and his great intelligence and understanding of the game. He must not be in a hurry.

After transferring from UCLA, Mara won the NCAA national championship in the United States playing under coach Dusty May at Michigan.
