Former Club Brugge captain Ruud Vormer has warned his former side to tighten up defensively ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven, noting that the Dutch club will ruthlessly punish any open spaces left at the back.
Strong European Start Impresses Former Captain
Club Brugge has enjoyed a flying start to the current European campaign, collecting six points from their opening three matches. Vormer highlighted victories against RC Lens and a notable away win over Inter Milan as proof of the Belgian side’s impressive efficiency. “They must continue on this path,” Vormer told the Krant van West-Vlaanderen. While acknowledging that Brugge had some fortune during their triumph in Milan, Vormer stressed that securing six points out of nine is never a matter of mere coincidence.
Defensive Vulnerabilities and PSV’s Attacking Threat
Despite the strong start, Vormer cautioned that PSV Eindhoven presents a completely different kind of tactical challenge. He specifically praised PSV manager Peter Bosz for his honest communication style and the high-octane attacking brand of football he implements. “If Club leaves a lot of space at the back, PSV can hurt them,” Vormer said. While he stopped short of declaring the Dutch side definitively superior to Brugge, he emphasized that Peter Bosz’s squad possesses exceptional individual quality and that the Belgian team must be fully prepared for a rigorous tactical battle.
Projecting the Knockout Stage Scenarios
Looking further ahead in the league phase schedule, Vormer remains optimistic about Club Brugge’s chances of advancing to the next round. The team faces upcoming fixtures that include home matches against Liverpool and Bodø/Glimt, alongside away trips to Napoli and Stuttgart. Vormer calculates that the team will realistically need 10 to 11 points to secure qualification for the knockout rounds. Securing a direct finish in the top eight remains a significantly steeper mountain to climb, requiring flawless execution, but the former midfielder maintains that anything is possible in European football.
