Cristiano Ronaldo’s standout 2007-08 campaign with Manchester United has been voted the greatest individual season in the history of the Ballon d’Or, surpassing rival Lionel Messi’s 2012 year in a global digital poll conducted to mark the trophy’s 70th anniversary.
The Vote That Crowned Old Trafford’s Peak
The poll, organized by France Football and opened to global fans in early October, invited participants to cast votes priced at one euro each without any limit on the number of submissions. The exercise aimed to determine the best single-season performance among players who have won the prestigious award at least twice. The final tally placed Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2007-08 season at the summit, followed by Messi’s 2012 campaign in second place, and Ronaldo’s 2017 season rounding out the podium in third.
The Numbers Behind the 2007-08 Triumph
During that 2007-08 season at age 23, the Portuguese forward scored 42 goals in 49 matches across all competitions. That total included 31 strikes in the Premier League, earning him the European Golden Shoe as the continent’s top scorer. He also finished as the top marksman in the UEFA Champions League, guiding Manchester United to a domestic league and European double. The campaign culminated in Moscow, where United defeated Chelsea on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Ronaldo scoring in regulation before missing his attempt in the decisive shootout.
Where the Rivalry Stands in the Record Books
Despite the exhaustive fan vote—known as the BOAT, or best Ballon d’Or of all time—the outcome does not alter the official honor roll maintained by France Football. Messi remains the record holder with eight official Ballon d’Or titles, while Ronaldo sits second with five. The ballot featured ten eligible candidates representing multi-time winners, with votes weighted by their total number of golden balls. Voting incentives included a digital commemorative photograph and entry into a draw for two tickets to the 2027 award gala, though organizers stressed the initiative was purely honorary and not an official physical trophy comparable to the historic Super Ballon d’Or presented to Alfredo Di Stéfano in 1989.
Legacy in the Collective Memory
Five of Ronaldo’s winning years—2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017—placed inside the top eight overall positions in the anniversary poll, while the first player to break the dominance of the modern era’s two defining stars was Ronaldo Nazário, whose 2002 campaign claimed 13th place. France Football has not announced plans for subsequent editions of the poll, leaving the 2007-08 Old Trafford masterpiece as the fan-voted pinnacle of modern football rivalries.
