Reese Brantmeier Wins Saguenay Challenger in Tight Final

American tennis player Reese Brantmeier captured the Challenger Banque Nationale de Saguenay singles title on Sunday, defeating Japan’s Yuki Naito 7-6, 7-6 in a closely contested final at Jonquière’s indoor facility.

Challenger Saguenay Final Settled in Two Close Tiebreaks

The championship match at the Club de tennis intérieur Saguenay tested both competitors across two demanding sets. Naito started the match strongly, winning the opening two games before Brantmeier stabilized her game and leveled the score at 4-4. The American ultimately took the first set in a tiebreak.

The second set followed a similar trajectory, with Naito once again claiming an early advantage. The two finalists traded games through the remainder of the set to force another tiebreak, where Brantmeier secured the deciding points to close out the tournament.

“It was very tight,” Brantmeier said after the match. “It couldn’t be closer than that and still be in two sets. It was a bit stressful. She played an excellent match and performed so well. She forced me to work hard, so I’m very proud today.”

Nineteenth Edition Draws Five Thousand Spectators to Jonquière

Tournament organizers reported a successful turnout for the 19th edition of the Saguenay Challenger. Caroline Delisle, the tournament’s president, stated that approximately 5,000 spectators attended the matches throughout the week, noting a mix of returning fans and first-time attendees.

“Some people come every day, and others came to see a match for the very first time, so we saw new faces as well,” Delisle said.

Planning for next year’s 20th-anniversary tournament is already underway. Organizers aim to increase spectator attendance and introduce new elements for the players.

Facility Expansion Proposal Awaits Government Funding Decision

The Club de tennis intérieur Saguenay continues to seek financial backing for a proposed $12 million facility expansion. The project was submitted last year to the Programme d’aide financière aux infrastructures récréatives, sportives et de plein air (PAFIRSPA) to address spatial limitations at the venue.

“If we had the expansion, it would help because we lack a bit of space,” Delisle explained, adding that a response from the funding program is anticipated by December.

Alongside infrastructure planning, tournament officials intend to maintain recruitment efforts aimed at attracting high-caliber players to future editions of the Saguenay event.
