Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a provisional suspension from the Portuguese Football Federation following his sudden departure from the national team training camp in Copenhagen late last month, RMC Sport reported.
Disciplinary Proceedings Opened by Federation
According to a statement relayed by A Bola, a non-automatic preventive suspension has been levied while the case is handled urgently by the governing body.
The federation confirmed that the case file was transmitted on Oct. 10, 2026, to the FPF Disciplinary Instruction Commission, accompanied by a strict media blackout until the investigation concludes.
Clash Over Playing Time With Jorge Jesus
Foot Mercato reported that the rupture stemmed from a sharp disagreement over playing time between Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus. The team captain learned he would not start the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen, prompting his exit from the camp on Sept. 30, 2026, ahead of the match.
L’Indépendant detailed that Ronaldo had previously sought assurances after being left on the bench during a prior 2–1 victory over Norway, revealing that he had drafted an eight-point text for the coach to acknowledge that a mistake was made regarding his deployment. Jorge Jesus reportedly refused to read the statement.
Reflecting on the fallout, Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, told Portuguese television outlet TV7 Dias that the sudden exit came as a profound shock. “I am triste, c’est normal. Ça a été un choc,” she said, according to RTL Info, noting her sadness that her son’s international career faced such turbulence.
Potential Sanctions Under National Regulations
Under Portuguese federation regulations cited by Foot Mercato, missing a training session, match, or team activity carries a potential suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside possible financial penalties.

Goal.com noted that while disciplinary announcements on Oct. 11, 2026, did not immediately resolve the timeline, local sports daily Record reported that Ronaldo’s public admission of responsibility could potentially halve any final penalty under current rules, reducing a maximum six-month ban down to three months.
Ronaldo Expresses Willingness to Serve Ban
In a detailed statement released earlier in the week, Ronaldo accepted full responsibility for his actions while acknowledging that his status as team captain represented an aggravating circumstance. He wrote that he would accept whatever disciplinary action the federation deemed appropriate.

“If I am in physical shape (…) after serving the suspension applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to play and win with our national team,” Ronaldo stated in his address, ruling out any immediate international retirement.
