Cristiano Ronaldo nearly retired from international football following Portugal’s elimination at the 2026 World Cup before reversing his decision at the urging of the national federation, according to an extensive public statement released [by the captain of Portugal](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nations-League/06-10-2026/cristiano-ronaldo-lettera-e-dietrofront-si-rimette-a-disposizione-della-nazionale.shtml).
The 41-year-old forward, who serves as the team’s captain and holds records for 234 appearances and 146 goals, revealed that he had even drafted a farewell letter to the fans after the World Cup exit. However, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) persuaded him to stay and consulted him on the appointment of Jorge Jesus as head coach—a choice [Ronaldo endorsed](https://www.sportmediaset.mediaset.it/calcio/calcioestero/cristiano-ronaldo-rompe-il-silenzio-jorge-jesus-si-e-rimangiato-la-parola-data_117367665-202602k.shtml), writing that "È stata la scelta giusta, come dimostrano i risultati".
## The Conflict and Departure from the National Team Retreat
Despite initially supporting the coaching choice, Ronaldo explained [the reasons for his sudden departure](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nations-League/06-10-2026/cristiano-ronaldo-lettera-e-dietrofront-si-rimette-a-disposizione-della-nazionale.shtml) from the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen prior to a match against Denmark. He accused Jorge Jesus of a double betrayal, pointing to broken agreements regarding playing time and media statements.

Ronaldo stated that he had agreed with Jesus not to play in two specific matches. To his surprise, during the international gathering, the coach asked him if he felt capable of playing 30 minutes. Although the request fell outside his recovery and training schedule, Ronaldo agreed, warmed up from halftime, watched the minutes pass, and was never called onto the pitch. "L’allenatore aveva infranto la sua promessa", [noted Il Post](https://www.ilpost.it/2026/10/06/cristiano-ronaldo-portogallo-allenatore/) regarding the benching during a Nations League match in Norway where he remained sidelined for the entire game for the first time in 18 years.
[Ronaldo claimed Jesus](https://sportmediaset.mediaset.it/calcio/calcioestero/cristiano-ronaldo-rompe-il-silenzio-jorge-jesus-si-e-rimangiato-la-parola-data_117367665-202602k.shtml) failed to adhere to an agreed-upon eight-point document that was supposed to be read during a contentious press conference. Instead, Ronaldo alleged that the coach displayed "espressioni e un’aggressività che ritengo ingiustificate".

## Ronaldo Apologizes to Teammates and Supporters
Following his departure from the squad of his own initiative after a conversation with the federation president, [Ronaldo offered apologies](https://gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nations-League/06-10-2026/cristiano-ronaldo-lettera-e-dietrofront-si-rimette-a-disposizione-della-nazionale.shtml) to his teammates and supporters. He addressed criticism over failing to greet fans by defending his record of signing the most autographs, taking the most selfies, and showing affection, calling it a moment of frustration that "non cancella nulla".
Despite the turmoil—during which the team secured victories including a 1-2 win in Norway, a 2-4 win in Denmark, and a 2-1 victory in Oporto to clinch a spot in the Nations League quarterfinals—Ronaldo declared his intent to return. "Se starò bene fisicamente, se giocherò per il club, dopo aver scontato la squalifica che mi verrà inflitta, sarò disponibile, come lo sono sempre stato fino ad oggi, per competere e vincere con la nostra nazionale", he stated.

Head coach Jorge Jesus addressed the situation by stating that Ronaldo remains a selectable option for the upcoming window provided he maintains his form at Al Nassr, noting, "Non so cosa possa decidere Cris, ma per me non è mai stato un caso".
