Phu Dong Sport Festival 2028: New Rules and Schedule for Students

The National Phu Dong Sport Festival will roll out across Vietnam between April and August 2028, featuring competition across 15 distinct sports during its opening phase, VietnamPlus reported. Held once every four years, the quadrennial student athletic gathering aims to foster regular physical activity and build lasting athletic habits among school-age competitors nationwide.

Organizing bodies have structured the upcoming 2028 edition into a rigorous two-phase format designed to accommodate student delegations from middle schools, vocational institutions, and continuing education centers across the country’s provinces and municipalities.

Phase One Regional Cluster Distribution and Disciplines

Cluster 1 places events in Lao Cai province, incorporating teams from Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, and Lang Son. Cluster 2 operates in Phu Tho province, gathering delegations from Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hung Yen, and the host province itself.

Further south, Cluster 3 centers on Quang Tri province, pulling in participants from Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Hue, and Da Nang. Cluster 4 lands in Lam Dong province to host athletes from Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, and Dong Nai.

Phase Two Competition Slate in Hue City

Following the completion of the regional cluster events, the festival shifts to its second and final stage in Hue. Scheduled to run from July to August 2028, Phase 2 narrows the competitive slate down to 10 sports.

The concluding program in Hue retains swimming, table tennis, volleyball, football, basketball, badminton, sepak takraw, athletics, vovnam, and traditional martial arts. Education and training departments across participating regions are responsible for assembling representative student delegations for both phases.

Professional Trainees and Medal Winners Cannot Enter Festival

To preserve the amateur integrity of school sports, organizers enforce strict eligibility boundaries for the 2028 festival. Students who currently train at professional sports centers and clubs affiliated with ministries, local departments, or municipal authorities are strictly prohibited from entering.

Any student athlete who has won medals at high-level national or international sports competitions is also barred from participation. Delegations must draw exclusively from students enrolled in general education, vocational institutions, and continuing education courses.
