The Philadelphia Sixers are struggling on the boards early in the NBA season, conceding an average of 14 offensive rebounds and 20 second-chance points per game, according to Basket USA reporting.
Philadelphia Defensive Struggles on the Glass
Opponents are grabbing 41.5 defensive rebounds per game against Philadelphia, ranking the team 25th across the league in that category. The defensive deficiencies surfaced again during a loss to the Detroit Pistons, where the Sixers dropped the opening minutes on the glass before attempting second-half tactical adjustments.
“If one wants to look at the glass half full, we force the opponent to take complicated shots late in the possession, but we must conclude and the players must be aware of it,” Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse said. “It is up to everyone to do it. Everyone must be on the alert to go get the ball when the shot is missed.”
Nurse Seeks Better Rebounding as Embiid Rests
Nurse noted that opposing teams aggressively crash the offensive glass against his squad, forcing physical battles in the paint.
“Teams are going to send players to the offensive rebound, we are going to be pushed around,” Nurse said. “We must correct this and we should be able to do it. We have images, we do exercises. We must now translate this onto the floor, right from the start of the match.”
Roster availability heavily impacts the frontcourt rotation. Joel Embiid sat out the contest against Detroit for rest management, forcing Nurse to adjust his lineups against the Pistons. Guard Tyrese Maxey emphasized that returning personnel will help stabilize the paint.
“In the immediate future, having Joel Embiid back and his replacements in the paint will be beneficial,” Maxey said. “We have to go there, we have to box out on the rebound, fight. We must do everything to take the rebounds.”
Sixers Seek Improved Defensive Execution in Next Games
The Sixers continue their regular-season schedule seeking improved defensive execution on missed shots as they await full frontcourt availability. Philadelphia returns to the floor to address their rebounding metrics against upcoming conference opponents.
