Novak Djokovic beats Alexander Zverev to reach Beijing semifinals

Novak Djokovic defeated world No. 2 Alexander Zverev 4–6, 6–4, 6–4 in the quarterfinals of the China Open in Beijing on Sunday, October 4, 2026, advancing to a semifinal meeting with Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. The three-set victory for the 39-year-old 24-time Grand Slam champion highlighted a tense on-court dispute over an officiating decision in the second set.

Disputed Call Sparks Second-Set Confrontation

The match turned contentious at the start of the second set when Zverev struck a ball out of bounds before approaching the chair umpire to protest. The German player argued that an LED advertising board near the court had flickered and distracted him during his service motion. The chair umpire upheld the protest and ordered the point replayed, a decision that drew immediate and vocal objections from Djokovic.

Djokovic argued that Zverev had continued playing out the rally instead of halting immediately upon being distracted. He has served, I have played a shot, he has played another one, and only then does he challenge. Is that okay? If the display bothered him, he should have stopped right after the serve, not continued. You missed the forehand and only then complained.

Zverev defended his delayed protest by explaining his unfamiliarity with the procedure for challenging visual distractions.

Djokovic strongly criticized the officiating protocol applied during the incident. That has to be one of the dumbest rule changes I have heard of in my life, Djokovic said. It makes no sense at all. If a player is disturbed, he has to stop immediately. Otherwise, we could play a rally of 30 shots, lose the point, and then say, ‘Well, now I’m challenging.’

Despite the on-court friction, the two players reconciled after the final point. Zverev congratulated Djokovic at the net following the conclusion of the two-hour, three-set encounter.

Reflecting on his performance and ongoing career motivation at age 39, Djokovic acknowledged the challenges of the 2026 season, during which he has yet to secure a tournament victory. It was difficult this year, but I’m still here and making the youngsters work for their money.

Djokovic moves on to face Daniil Medvedev in the Beijing semifinals.
