Czech tennis player Nikola Bartůňková advanced to the China Open semifinals on Thursday, defeating seventh-seeded Karolína Muchová 6-3, 6-0 in Beijing. The 20-year-old secured her spot in the final four in just 67 minutes, a career best for her 2026 season.
Dominant Quarterfinal Performance in Beijing
Bartůňková, currently ranked 34th, maintained control throughout the match, denying her fellow countrywoman any opportunity to establish momentum. The match saw the younger Czech player utilize an aggressive strategy, pressuring Muchová during the early stages of rallies. By employing a mix of powerful groundstrokes and precise drop shots, Bartůňková forced Muchová to cover the court extensively, preventing the former Wimbledon finalist from finding her rhythm.
The first set concluded 6-3, with Bartůňková breaking Muchová’s serve twice in the opening four games. Although Muchová attempted a brief recovery—saving five set points before ultimately dropping the set—the second set proved one-sided. Bartůňková broke serve in the opening game of the second set and did not concede a single game, closing out the match in just over an hour.
Bartůňková Reaches First WTA 1000 Semifinal
This victory marks Bartůňková’s first WTA 1000 semifinal appearance. Previously, she reached the semifinals at the tour level twice: at Guadalajara in 2025 and earlier in 2026 at Monterrey. The win also represents her third career victory over a top-10 opponent, adding to a list that includes a win against Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open and a victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of this tournament.
The statistical disparity between the two players was evident in the final count. Bartůňková recorded 19 winners, seven more than Muchová, while the seventh seed struggled with consistency, committing 37 unforced errors. Having ended 2025 ranked 130th, Bartůňková’s performance in Beijing ensures she will move into the top 30 in the world rankings following the conclusion of the event.

Path to the China Open Final
She is scheduled to play the semifinal match against either fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva or 19th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova. The result of that upcoming match will determine which player advances to the final of the Beijing tournament.
