NFL Referees Association Appeals Suspensions of Two Officials Over Player Incidents

“The NFL has a responsibility to hold officials accountable, but that must not translate into excessive or inconsistent discipline that ignores established precedents,” said Scott Green, executive director of the NFL Referees Association.

The NFL Referees Association announced Tuesday that it will formally challenge the severity of recent suspensions handed down to two game officials for unprofessional conduct on the field. The league suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games after he swore at Arizona Cardinals player Trey McBride, while referee Adrian Hill received a one-game suspension for yelling and gesturing at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson.

According to the executive director of the NFLRA, the union plans to sit down with league officiating executives and players’ association leadership to address standards of discipline and escalating friction between players and crew members.

The union contends that the penalties go beyond what is justified by the incidents and fail to account for the intense environments officials face weekly. The NFLRA argues that holding crews accountable while ignoring or minimizing player and coach behavior directed at striped jerseys fails to solve the broader issue.

Jeff Seeman Receives Two-Game Suspension for Swearing at Trey McBride

Line judge Jeff Seeman received a two-game suspension from the league following an on-field altercation during the Arizona Cardinals’ matchup against the New York Giants. Seeman was filmed swearing directly at Cardinals player Trey McBride during the contest.

The NFLRA acknowledged that Seeman’s conduct failed to meet the baseline standards expected of professionals working games. However, the union maintains that a two-game ban is overly punitive compared to historical precedent for verbal altercations between officials and players.

Adrian Hill Gets One-Game Suspension for Yelling at Eric Wilson

Referee Adrian Hill drew a one-game suspension for his actions during the Minnesota Vikings game. Hill was caught on video yelling at Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson and aggressively motioning for him to move away.

The confrontation occurred after Wilson attempted to help the referee stand up following an on-field collision.

Scott Green noted that while players and coaches frequently test officials with high-tension complaints and verbal jabs, the league must balance accountability with fairness. The union head emphasized that officials operate in volatile environments where emotions run hot, but reiterated that outbursts from the officiating crew cannot simply be dismissed as part of the game.

NFLRA Pushes for Fair Disciplinary Standards for Officials

The NFLRA confirmed it will push for disciplinary standards that are fair, consistent, and strictly proportional to the infraction. The organization maintains that singling out officials for severe bans without addressing sideline behavior creates a double standard.

The union intends to bring these concerns directly to the NFL officiating department and the NFL Players Association in upcoming meetings focused on on-field conduct and mounting player-official confrontations.
